spamalot } { of possessive mothers and worrying fathers

Landon: [rubs the back of his neck] I, uh. Don't really want to be home right now.

Liam: We're not actually doing anything, Dad, I promise.

Derek: No, I believe you. I'm just worried about Landon. [sits on the edge of Liam's bed] Is it something I can help with?

Landon: [he shakes his head] My mom's just ... taking a swing towards the psychopathic side of things lately. I stay out of her hair for a bit and she cools off.

Derek: [nods, thinking a moment] Well, you're welcome to stay here. But just come in the front door. [holds out a key]

Liam: Dad?

Derek: You're both young adults, and you have both been very respectful of us. [meaning you're being teenagers, but you haven't had sex in the house which he is grateful for] Just keep doing that, and we're good.

Landon: [eyes look from the key in his hand and back up to his face again for a moment before] Are you sure?

Derek: I'm sure. Worse thing I would have to do is redo the front door locks later.

Landon: [nods slowly, before reaching out and taking the key from him] Thanks.

Derek: Now, does anyone in your family know you're here? Since you aren't 18, I don't want to have the sheriff at my door. Though I can talk to him usually if he does.

Landon: ... Probably not. They don't know about Liam.

Liam: Well, your brother does, just not that we're dating.

Landon: They don't know where you live or anything. It's better that way.

Derek: Well, if you are worried about them coming in here, or really feel you're in danger, promise me you will tell me, Landon. I can help, but werewolves lack the ability to read minds.

Landon: [nods] No, I know. I don't think I'm in danger me and my mom just ... both have really big tempers and it can get a little explosive when the ones we're pissed at are each other. Besides, if she really needed to know where I was she'd probably just track the GPS on my phone before she called the police.

Derek: Alright. And if she shows up here, she can talk to me first.

Landon: [nods]

Derek: Have you eaten dinner yet?

Landon: [shakes his head] Not yet.

Derek: I'll go make you a sandwich then. [since the Hales already ate]

Landon: Thanks. [and things go back to normal until a few days later when there's a surprise knocking at the Hale loft door?]

Derek: [yup, and he will take a break from working on grading papers at the kitchen table to go and answer the door]

Mona: [and behind it is this lady pushing her sunglasses on top of her head and one hand resting on her hip.] Hi. I think you have something of mine.

Derek: I'm sorry, I don't think I even know you.

Mona: Oh, sorry. My mistake. [she holds out his hand] I'm Mona. I'm Landon's mother.

Derek: Ah, yes. [and he will shake her hand] Nice to meet you, Mona. I'm Derek Hale. [yes, those Hales]

Mona: [eyebrows go up] Huh. A better class of friends than he usually goes for.

Derek: Well, my son tends to have good taste in his friends.

Mona: I'm sure he does. [a beat] Well, I'm here to pick him up, if you don't mind.

Derek: I'll let him know you're here. Why don't you have a seat? [he motioned for the living room couch]

Mona: [just nods and makes her way over, plopping down onto the couch with an air of supernatural grace as she looks around the room]

Derek: [and he will head upstairs to Liam's room and knock on the door and count to five before opening it] Landon, your mother's downstairs.

Landon: [looks up from the video game they were totally playing and all the color drains from his face] Is she mad?

Derek: I'm not getting mad off her. More a very possessive nature.

Landon: That sounds about right. [sighs] Does she want me to leave?

Derek: She does.

Liam: Do you want to go?

Landon: Not really, but I should. I haven't been home in a week.

Derek: Grab your stuff then, and come down when you're ready to go. [and he will go downstairs to entertain Mona] He's getting his stuff together. Can I get you something to drink while we wait?

Mona: [shakes her head, she's just eyeing Lucy in her playpen with a look that could possibly be disdain] Cute kid.

Derek: She's cute now, but let her out and she's a tiny terror on two legs.

Mona: [she smirks a bit at that] Then let's leave her where she is.

Derek: So how have you been doing adjusting to small town life in Beacon Hills?

Mona: This is hardly my first time in a small town. It's not my usual fare, but I know how to manage.

Derek: Landon's mentioned you came here from New York. It's a big change.

Mona: It is, but a necessary one.

Derek: Big cities are sometimes harder on the supernatural populations than you'd think.

Mona: Not for us. We need more people around. But things got a little complicated and we needed to lay low for a bit.

Derek: Well, LA is only an hour away. Why didn't you go there?

Mona: [she makes a face] I hate LA. And, I don't know - there was something about here that just ... called to me.

Derek: Yeah, we hear that a lot around here. [normally it would be the nemeton, but it had been destroyed at this point]

Mona: [she shrugs] It's not bad for a small town.

Derek: So do you have any plans for things to do while you're here?

Mona: [she shrugs] I've got a job, for now. Other than that, we'll see what happens.

Derek: Well, if you ever do need anything, just let us know. We tend to take care of those in our town when we can.

Mona: So helpful. What a pleasant surprise.

Derek: [shifts a bit] Why wouldn't we be?

Mona: [she gives a bit of a shrug] Haven't exactly had the greatest track record with wolf packs in the past.

Derek: I've had the feeling about that from the caution I've seen from your son. Though I've been hoping someone would fill me in freely before I feel I need to research on my own.

Mona: Assuming you know what we are, people have a lot of ... preconceptions. Most of them just jump to some unfortunate conclusions.

Derek: Humor me and explain. I tend not to be most people.

Mona: [she smiles slightly and is about to explain, but before she can get that far ...]

Landon: My brother seduced the mate of the last alpha we dealt with. She didn't take it well.

Mona: [her eyes narrow] That was an isolated case.

Derek: I see. I'm pretty sure though he won't fair the same chances with my father. [small smirk]

Mona: Don't worry. We're not looking to make any waves this time around. Your mother's reputation speaks for itself.

Derek: She does tend to have one. But she's not the one in the family you really need to worry about. [there's a smirk, though, because anyone who really knows the Hales knows that it's Peter you need to watch]

Mona: [she doesn't know them well enough, but she'll take note of that all the same] Duly noted.

Derek: [grins and looks up at Landon] Got everything, kiddo?

Landon: [nods] Thank you for letting me stay.

Derek: Anytime. And remember, you've still got an English paper due Monday. [and he will get up to see them out]

Mona: [will put a hand possessively on Landon's shoulder and he doesn't look all that comfortable with it, but he will go all the same] Sorry for the trouble.

Landon: [just nods about the paper. he'll get it done]

Derek: He's no trouble at all. It was nice meeting you, Mona.

Mona: You too. [and with that they're gone]

Derek: [and he's going to wait until the elevator door shuts, and then just lean his ear against the seam to listen to their conversation as they go down]

Mona: [nope, she's smarter than that, it will be very superficial until she knows they're out of earshot]

Derek: [he doesn't feel all the comfortable with having let Landon go, going back into the house a moment, and then going to grab his phone and dial Victor and Leah to see if they can fill him in more on who Mona really is and if they have any intel]

Leah: [it's a couple rings before she grabs the phone and answers] Derek, hey.

Derek: Hey, Leah. It's not too late out there, is it?

Leah: No, not at all. What's up?

Derek: [looks up at Liam who is now sitting on the stairs, giving him a nod] There's a new family that's move out this way, and I'm curious if you may know anything about them since they were in New York previously. [gives her Mona's name and description]

Leah: [she pauses for a moment before cringing] She a succubus?

Derek: Yes. That would be her

Leah: Yeah, I ... we know enough to know she's bad news but not enough to prove anything.

Derek: Is it enough that we should be worried about her relocating to Beacon Hills?

Leah: We think there may be a body count, but again, we couldn't prove it. Most of the stuff we can prove is her using her succubus abilities to her advantage in bad ways.

Derek: [looks up at where Liam is sitting on the stairs] Peter is trying to get me more information on their habits and abilities, Do you know how strong their pack mentality is?

Leah: Don't fuck with her kids.

Derek: Yeah, well one of her kids is very friendly with one of mine.

Leah: I'm gonna guess Liam and the teenager. Landon? He's okay.

Derek: Yeah, and Landon is actually a good kid, and I think he's trying to find a way free of them. He's been crashing here some nights and I'm worried what she may do to him.

Leah: I don't think she'll hurt him. He used to hang out with the Prices when he was here in the city, and Verity never noticed anything abusive. His view of the world just doesn't coincide with theirs.

Derek: So I've noticed.

Leah: Just ... don't make it seem like you're trying to take him away from her and you should be fine. He's only got a year and a half until he's free and clear.

Derek: I'll remember that. I'm just worried that I'm not the one that's going to become the target in all this.

Leah: You're worried about Liam.

Liam: [looks at his hands, not able to look at his father, obviously worried]

Derek: They've been good for each other, but it's going to put Landon into a very precarious position I don't think he's going to be able to handle.

Leah: Look, I don't know what to tell you, because I don't know him that well. You're going to have to figure that out on your own.

Derek: I know, I'm just being the family worrier, and trying to figure out how to find a way that this doesn't end with someone getting hurt.

Leah: My advice? Protect the kid if he needs it. But wait for him to come to you.

Derek: [nods] I can do that. If you can send me anything you might have from what you know, even if it's not enough to prove what happened, it can give me a guideline to figure out some defenses.

Leah: Yeah, I'll see what I can dig up. I'll talk to Verity, she probably knows more than I do.

Derek: Thanks, Leah. I really appreciate it.

Leah: No problem. Just ... be careful. Succubi are tricky and they won't just respond with physical violence if you piss them off.

Derek: Yeah, Landon gave me a bit of a hint. [thinks] I think Liam may want to have Landon show him how to protect himself from their techniques.

Liam: [perks up a bit, confused]

Leah: Probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Derek: And then he can show me. In case I need to protect them both. [and everyone else]

Leah: [nods] Hopefully it works.

Derek: I hope so. Listen, let me let you go. See you in a few months?

Leah: Yeah, see you then. And tell my sister to take it easy and that Kieran will be heading up to check on her in a few weeks.

Derek: Yeah, we're prepping for his arrival already. And I'm still being outvoted in moving them both out to the preserve so that Jason and my mom are close in case she needs them.

Leah: Kieran is a doctor, I think they'll be fine.

Derek: Again, family worrier. Humor me, alright? [chuckles]

Leah: Yeah, well, we O'Malleys don't take well to hovering. Too much of that worrying will get you punched in the face.

Derek: I'm grateful for my healing factor more and more every day.

Leah: I'm sure.

Derek: I'll talk to you later. Tell the kids Uncle Derek sends his love.

Leah: Will do. I'll see you soon. [and with that, she'll hang up]

Liam: [waits until Derek hangs up] Dad, am I in trouble?

Derek: No, no you're not Liam.

Liam: Is my dating Landon going to put the pack in danger?

Derek: [sighs and looks up at his son, and nods] A bit, yeah. Is he worth it though to you?

Liam: [thinks for a moment, then nods] Yeah, I really think he is.

Derek: Then we'll figure it out. Think you can ask Landon to help teach you how to protect yourself from his family?

Liam: I can ask.

Derek: Good. You're going to want to.

Fiona: [wanders out of the bedroom, rubbing at her eyes as she does. She glances between the two of them before frowning] What? What'd I miss?

Derek: Landon's mother came to get him. She wasn't very happy that he's been hiding here.

Fiona: Is everybody okay?

Derek: For now. [looks over at Liam] Take your sister and help get her ready for bed?

Liam: [nods and goes to pick up Lucy and heads to the finished office converted nursery that was next door to Derek & Fiona's bedroom]

Derek: [goes to sit on the couch with Fiona] I talked to your sister about anything they knew about Landon's family from New York.

Fiona: What'd she say?

Derek: That there was a body count, but they can't be sure it was her. Landon mentioned that the reason they got out of town was that his brother seduced another alpha's mate. She confirmed that Landon doesn't have the same mindset, but that his mother is very protective of her kids.

Fiona: So she's not going to let him go anytime soon.

Derek: The problem is, I think Landon wants to go. I think whatever he and Liam have is making that urge stronger, and I'm worried.

Fiona: Honey, you're always worried.

Derek: [smirks a bit] Yeah, I know. And I'm hitting my overload point I think. [between Fiona's pregnancy and now Liam & Landon...]

Fiona: [sighs softly] Well, soon Kieran will be here and you can let some of those worries go a little.

Derek: [one eyebrow goes up] Yeah, good luck with that.

Fiona: [raises her eyebrows right back]

Derek: I love you. [because that always works]

Fiona: [smirks before leaning in to kiss him] I love you too. Worry lines and all.

Derek: [kisses her back] You slept through dinner. Want me to reheat you something?

Fiona: [shakes her head before shifting to curl into him] No, I'm not that hungry right now.

Derek: [pulls her more into her arms] Well, we can watch something for a while. I only have a few tests left to grade.

Fiona: Mmmm. That sounds good.

Liam: [comes back out, holding Lucy in her pajamas as she snuggles into her brother's neck] Do you want me to put her to bed? I think I can do it.

Fiona: [glances over and nods with a small smile] Sure. Just call if you need help, okay?

Liam: I will. [and he's going to go to go and get her a bottle and heat it up, and then head into the nursery and read Lucy her storybook while rocking her in the rocking chair.]

Derek: [listens for a bit, and then just kisses Fiona's forehead]

Fiona: [closes her eyes as she relaxes] How's he doing?

Derek: He's worried. He really likes Landon a lot, and I have to say... they have probably been a good influence for the other.

Fiona: Mmmm. [sighs] Landon's a good kid.

Derek: He is. And if he's in trouble, I want to be able to have us here to be able to help him. I'm just not sure how yet.

Fiona: You'll figure it out.

Derek: Right now I just want to make it through the rest of your pregnancy before I have to worry about an angry succubus trying to break down our door.

Fiona: I think we can manage that much.

Derek: Which, just so you know, if for any reason I get seduced by an evil succubus... I'm sorry.

Fiona: If she tries to seduce you away from me, I'll shotgun her in the face.

Derek: That's what I wanted to hear. [smirks against her hair]
