spamalot } { of winston churchills and incorrigible brother-in-laws
Fiona: [due to all the risks involved, they had scheduled the Cesarian so that they could minimize the risk for the baby, so right now they're getting ready to head to the hospital. Fiona is sitting in the car while Derek drops Lucy off with Talia and she's trying not to be nervous. But that's next to impossible because she's really, really nervous]
Derek: [he's going to come back, and yeah, he can smell that nervous energy. He has it too. So when he comes back into the car, he's going to lean across to kiss her gently] You doing okay?
Fiona: [takes a deep breath and tries to relax into the kiss but she's not getting there] About as well as I can be.
Derek: [he holds her hand with one hand, intending to use the other to drive.] Just keep telling yourself that in three hours, this will be over and you're going to be holding our baby.
Fiona: [she nods slowly, squeezing his hand] And hopefully everything will go right.
Derek: Everything will go right. [confident smile that he's so not fully feeling. But he's trying to be the optimist here. these role reversal moments]
Fiona: [and she loves him for it because she needs it. She needs someone to tell her that everything will be fine. Her hand moves to rest over the top of her stomach and she just keeps her eyes down the rest of the way to the hospital]
Derek: [and when they get there, he will go get a wheelchair and get her in and checked in and settled in the maternity ward]
Fiona: [where she will just fret some more until they take her off to the operating room to have the baby.]
Kieran: [stays behind with his brother in law and rests his hand on his shoulder] It'll be fine.
Derek: [taking deep breaths] Thanks. I've done this for everyone.
Kieran: [laughs and shakes his head] I've actually delivered babies and I was still having a panic attack when it was my own. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Derek: [nods, and looks up at Kieran] She's going to be alright, right?
Kieran: Yeah, she's going to be fine. [gives his shoulder a squeeze before tugging him out of the room] C'mon. Let's get some coffee.
Derek: [and he's going to follow, knowing he would feel if anything bad happened. At least Fiona was going to be out for this so he would get the luxury of not having to breathe through the mate bond version of childbirth.]
Kieran: [will get them both a cup of coffee before sitting him down in the cafeteria] Thought about names yet?
Derek: No, not really. I mean, we have a list, but we don't know the sex yet so kinda hard to pin something down. The one thing we agree is no L names.
Kieran: So what's on the list?
Derek: Well, for a girl we have Samantha, Jessica, and Michelle. For a boy, Tyler, Jacob and Samuel.
Kieran: [nods] Nice choices.
Derek: I'm kinda leaning towards Samuel or Samantha myself. Samuel Jacob.
Kieran: [tips his head to the side] Samuel Jacob Hale.
Derek: Too pretentious? [worried look]
Kieran: [shakes his head] I think it's just the nickname end of things - Sam Hale.
Derek: Sammy Hale?
Kieran: That does sound less like a swearing hillbilly, but I don't know if he's going to want to be called Sammy forever.
Derek: [raised eyebrow look]
Kieran: [dramatic hillbilly voice] What in the Sam Hale! [which could also same like "what in the Sam hell" given the accent. he feels it makes his point well enough and he's not being entirely serious]
Derek: [wrinkles his nose] Yeah, ruin my choice, thanks.
Kieran: I'm just trying to get ahead of early childhood scarring. [children can be mean, and he has the mentality of a five year old sometimes. He gives a small shrug, as he drums his fingers against the table] What about Jacob Samuel? Jake Hale.
Derek: I don't like it in that order. [thinks] Jacob Tyler? He could shorten it to J.T. if he wanted.
Kieran: [considers for a moment, before nodding] That works.
Derek: I should probably scrap Samantha too for the same reason.
Kieran: Eh, it's a little less formal to call a girl Samantha. Samuel's kind of old fashioned, but Samantha is okay. Double standard, don't ask me why.
Derek: Okay then, if Fiona's good for it... I think we have choices.
Kieran: [nods] And they aren't obviously Irish. You are already a step up over our parents.
Derek: Well, he or she will only be half Irish, so... [grins]
Kieran: [laughs] Half-Irish is Irish enough, thank you very much.
Derek: [laughs] Yeah, I'm sure. And if they inherit the wolf gene, they will be able to drink any full Irish family member under the table.
Kieran: God help us all.
Derek: [laughs, looking in his coffee cup] I need a refill. Want anything?
Kieran: [shakes his head] I'm good.
Derek: [is going to go get a refill, taking a moment to just close his eyes and make sure he could feel Fiona still and even send her some love and comfort through it. He's still working on understanding this bond]
Fiona: [she's still there and she's awake but she can't feel a thing so ... everything's aces as far as she's concerned]
Derek: [Sends his love anyway and goes back to Kieran] Thanks, by the way... for being out here these last few weeks.
Kieran: Nah, my pleasure. I figured there was going to be no other way to keep her in bed where she belonged.
Derek: And the alternative was to take her to my mom's. My mom would have kept her in bed.
Kieran: No, she would have wanted to be home. Besides, I rarely ever get to see Lucy and Liam, it was good to get in some Uncle Kieran time. [and brother-sister time, but that was usually when Lucy was napping between them and Liam and Derek were at school.]
Derek: I know Liam's been happy to have you. Two years later and he's still getting used to having a huge family that spans half the world at this point.
Kieran: I don't think it's something you ever really get used to. It just becomes something you're grateful for.
Derek: And you even got to meet the boyfriend. Normally Nik and Cormac get all the in-law excitement first from him.
Kieran: Nik he's clearly using for his kid.
Derek: Obviously. Gabe and Liam have been as thick as thieves since the day they met.
Kieran: Which has been good for both of them.
Derek: True. The citizens of Nevada when they are together? Not so much. [laughs]
Kieran: [he laughs] It's hard to believe those kids are adopted into the respective O'Malley and Kirsanov families with the kind of trouble they get into.
Derek: Just shows how quickly we can influence the young.
Kieran: Indeed.
Derek: [looks at the clock] How long does this usually take?
Kieran: It can take a couple hours. Getting in is the easy part, the part that's more time consuming is stitching everything up and making sure the baby's healthy. But provided there aren't any complications we should be hearing something ... [he glances up towards the door and Melissa McCall is making their way towards them with a smile on her face] ... Now.
Derek: [blinks and turns] Melissa?
Melissa: [big smiles as she reaches over to place a hand on his shoulder gently] It's a boy.
Derek: [blinks, and then his face is literal sunshine] A boy? I have a son. [he already had one, but Liam understands the difference]
Melissa: Yep. Fiona is still in post-op so it'll be a little while before you can see her but we've got him in the nursery right now if you want to come up and see him.
Derek: Yes. [that's a given. he looks at Kieran] Both of us, right?
Melissa: Of course. Follow me.
Derek: [tosses his coffee away and goes to follow, all but dragging Kieran along with him]
Melissa: [and up they go to the nursery where Melissa will stop outside the window and peer in for a moment, trying to pick out the bassinet in question. eventually she brightens and then points to a tiny dark haired bundle on the left-hand side] That's him. Third from the left.
Derek: [he looks in, and it's almost like instinct that he was looking at the right bassinet before Melissa pointed at it. He just lets his finger run along the edge of the window, looking in at the tiny baby] He's perfect. [said softly, already in love]
Melissa: [smiles softly, rubbing his shoulder] They're just running some tests to make sure everything's healthy, but once that's done and Fiona's back in the maternity ward, we'll let you go see both of them. They'll have to stay here for three days to make sure everything's copasetic, but once that's done you can take them both home.
Derek: It'll get me enough time to get everything together. [and time for any O'Malley and Kirsanovs to arrive for their release]
Melissa: [she nods] I'm gonna go check on your wife and I'll be right back, okay? [she doesn't really expect him to go anywhere.]
Derek: Tell her I love her if she's awake, alright? [yup, not moving]
Melissa: I will. [and off she goes]
Derek: [he pulls out his phone] You want to text your family and I'll get mine? [though it will end up being a very short blurb to them all]
Kieran: [nods as he turns to grab his phone to do so] Sure. Should be fast enough.
Derek: [and everyone in the Hale side of the family will get a "pack" text of - It's a boy. Mom and baby doing fine. More details later.]
Kieran: [slightly longer and more ridiculous. But then again, this is Kieran and that's his standard modous operandi. Possibly finished with "bring beer"]
Derek: [and once that's done, just looking at his son] He look like a Jacob Tyler to you?
Kieran: [looks back again before pushing up on his toes to get a better look] I think so. You're going to have to get Fi's approval on that first, but ... Jacob Tyler Hale.
Derek: Well, yeah, though right now I could totally name him something obscure and she would agree to it. I'll give her some time to get lucid again before asking.
Kieran: Good plan. I appreciate you not taking advantage of her riding high on endorphins and hormones.
Derek: I would like to have to try and figure out a divorce with a mate bond, thanks.
Kieran: I'm sure.
Derek: [gets a text back from Scott saying that Liam is pretty much dancing in his seat, thought you should know. laughs] At least someone's happy.
Kieran: [and eventually the doctors will start moving and take the bassinet out to the room] Looks like they're taking him to see Fi.
Derek: I guess we should go to the nurses' station and see if we can go in too, or if they need to work with Fi first. I remember Laura's first baby, they had to work with her first to teach her to breastfeed and Jason wasn't allowed in since it can be a bit emotionally overwhelming.
Kieran: If she decides to breastfeed. Michaela didn't. But I don't know what her decision was there, I don't discuss her boobs with her. [moving on] I think she's just going to need a moment, period. There's a lot she's been bottling up for nine months.
Derek: Yeah, trust me, I know.
Kieran: [just nods as he waits quietly and a few minutes later, Melissa is coming back down the hallway]
Melissa: Ready?
Derek: You want to hang back a bit and I can take the brunt of the emotions?
Kieran: [nods in agreement before waving a hand] No, go. I can wait.
Derek: Thanks. [and he's going to go follow Melissa back]
Fiona: [she had dozed off for a little in the post op and when she woke up the bassinet was sitting in the room next to her. She starts to push up, but as she tries to sit the pull of her stitches made her stop and lie back down again. Between her and her nurse she managed to work it out so that she was resting on her side facing the door and her son was resting on the bed next to her. He's awake and kicking his legs as he tries to find the ground and making noises and there and the rush of it is overwhelming. The tears start slipping down her cheeks, nine months of withheld joy hitting her all at once and as she cries, the door to the room opens and Derek slips in. She glances up at him, flashing him a bright smile he probably hasn't seen in a very long time before she manages to speak] We did it.
Derek: Technically, you did all the work. [goes over to lean over her, nuzzling her cheek and kissing her] I just held your hand and kept you sane.
Fiona: [she huffs a laugh at that, one hand leaving their son's stomach and brushing at her cheek for a moment before shaking her head, not really able to take her eyes off him] Just look at him.
Derek: I know. He's perfect. [he shifts to go sit in the bed, moving so that Fiona could lean back into his arms and he could just hold her, the one going over her also gently going to cradle their son in his big hand] Our little miracle.
Fiona: [just curls into him as she relaxes eyes closing as she stays close] I still can't believe everything turned out okay.
Derek: I guess for once we earned a bit of good karma. [kisses her neck]
Fiona: [smiles softly as she nods] Yeah, I guess we did.
Derek: So, you figure out your number one name pick?
Fiona: [she shakes her head] I couldn't ... I was too nervous.
Derek: Well, your brother ruined mine.
Fiona: Goddamnit, Kieran.
Derek: Just imagine him in his worst redneck accent going "what in the Sam Hale!"
Fiona: [she can't help it. she laughs]
Derek: So yeah, scratch that one.
Fiona: Well, what else did you have in mind?
Derek: I'm actually thinking Jacob Tyler.
Fiona: [glances over to the baby as she lets him catch her finger] Jacob Tyler Hale. I like it.
Derek: Me too. [kisses her shoulder] Think he'll like it?
Fiona: I think so.
Derek: Then our son has a name. [he pulled him a bit closer to Fiona and him]
Fiona: [nods as she looks over at him with a smile] Hi, Jake.
Derek: [nuzzles] Scott texted to tell me Liam's excited to have a brother.
Fiona: Good.
Derek: I'm going to have to take a picture of him to send to the packs. Your sister may also want proof of life. [chuckles]
Fiona: [she laughs] Okay. Sounds good.
Derek: You tired? I can hold him for a while, while you get some sleep.
Fiona: [she nods] They said I should sleep. I just don't know if I wanna let him go. [he might disappear and go away or it could be a dream, but she doesn't want it to be. She wants it to be real]
Derek: Alright, then let me do this. [he's going to shift, getting up and walking around to the other side of the bed. He will lay down, pressing his forehead against hers, creating a wall on the other side of Jake, and reached up to run a hand along her face] Better?
Fiona: [nods with a small smile, her hand moving to his side] Yeah, this is good.
Derek: [kisses her] I love you, Fi.
Fiona: I love you too. [and with that she will curl up and close her eyes, drifting off to sleep not long after]
Derek: [when she's asleep, he'll then turn and pay attention to Jake, stroking his cheek gently but not taking him from Fiona’s arms] Hey, buddy. I've been waiting a long for you.
Jake: [kicks his legs through the air as he lays where he is, big eyes blinking up at him as he stays where he is]
Derek: [leans down to kiss him] Welcome to the pack.
Jake: [gurgle gurgle happy baby noises]
Derek: [and he's going to just curl around his family, giving his sin his finger to hold onto and doze off]
Fiona: [and they're just going to be a happy sleeping family for a while]
Liam: [and eventually someone is going to poke his head in. He totally didn't run to the hospital after his last class, nope] Mom? Dad?
Fiona: [stirs at the sound of his voice and gives him a sleepy smile] Hey, Liam
Liam: [inches in, closing the door behind him] You look a lot better now. You feel better?
Fiona: [she nods with a small smile] Yeah, I do. [most of it was mental but not physical, but it doesn't change the fact that a weight has been lifted. she shifts, wincing a bit because everything hurts, but she's turning just enough so that Liam can see the baby in her arms] Wanna meet your brother?
Derek: [he stirs just in time to see Fiona's wince, and his hand goes to her cheek to steal a bit of that pain] Hey Liam.
Liam: Hi Dad. [and he's going to crawl up onto the bed, a straggly and starting to be scruffy teen, but still a tiny puppy of a wolf] Hey, I'm you big brother. What name did they stick you with?
Derek: Jacob Tyler.
Liam: Well, better than Sam.
Fiona: Have you been talking to your Uncle Kieran?
Liam: Nope. [totally has. He stretches out on the space between his parents, reaching up to play with Jake's foot] He's smaller than Lucy.
Fiona: He's younger than Lucy.
Liam: No, no when you first brought her home. Lucy was longer.
Fiona: [smirks] He's still younger than her. Lucy was three or four months old at that point.
Liam: Oh. [playing his finger on his foot still] So are we going to have to move? I mean, we're running out of bedrooms...
Fiona: Well, right now we're okay. Lucy's getting her own room and Jake can stay with us until we figure things out.
Derek: If nothing else, we'll just ship you off to live with Grandma.
Liam: Bullshit.
Fiona: I hear she's got plenty of space.
Derek: Language.
Liam: Hey Jake, rule number one - our parents are trolls.
Fiona: It is a force of habit.
Derek: And you're just as bad.
Liam: You are a bad influence.
Fiona: Oh, sure. It's all our fault. [yep, nope.]
Liam: It always comes back to the parents. [nods]
Derek: I bet I could barter with Marissa and Nik a payout for you to move there...
Liam: Um, no. Not unless I get to take Landon.
Fiona: Yeah, we can't make any promises there.
Liam: Them I'm staying. You're stuck with me.
Derek: Well, at least we can tap you both for babysitting.
Fiona: Yes, because that is what teenage boys are good for.
Liam: Hey, I'm good for that. [because that means Landon comes over, babies to bed early and parents out late so makeout times]
Fiona: Don't get into too much trouble in the process.
Liam: [grins] So speaking of, can Landon come over tonight?
Derek: Your uncle Kieran's going to be there.
Liam: I know.
Fiona: Don't get into too much trouble.
Liam: I'm so not a troublemaker. You act like I'm a rebel or something.
Fiona: You're a teenage boy with a significant other. That is a recipe for trouble.
Liam: At least you don't have to worry about ME getting pregnant. [smirks at Fiona]
Derek: [ taps him upside the head]
Fiona: [there's a look] Be careful what you wish for. You never know what might happen.
Liam: If I get pregnant, Mom, I think there are a lot of things we should be concerned about.
Fiona: I agree.
Liam: But can he? I promise we won't annoy uncle Kieran. He won't know Landon's even there.
Derek: You do realize that your uncle Kieran is the scary one you should never underestimate, right?
Fiona: He's right. He's the least predictable.
Liam: God, guys, I'm not going to do anything. [eye roll] Not anything more than I do when you're home, at least.
Derek: And just what are you doing when we're home...
Liam: .... Not the point.
Fiona: It's a little the point. And technically, since he's your uncle, you should be on even better behavior for him.
Liam: [pouts] Okay. We'll behave. [mostly]
Fiona: Good boy.
Derek: You know, I think Peter did it right waiting for his first to be an adult and married before having more. [because a teen, toddler and infant? What is their life becoming]
Fiona: [she makes a face] I'm not. I'd prefer to still be young while my child is growing up, and I won't stay young as long as you will, sweetie.
Derek: You'll always be young and beautiful to me. [ leans over to kiss her]
Liam: [rolls his eyes, reaching up to tickle Jake's belly]
Jake: [squirms a bit because no that's not good before promptly bursting into tears]
Fiona: Oh, no ... [and then it's a rush to try and soothe the baby again]
Liam: I was just tickling him! [pulls back his hand]
Derek: It's okay, he's just too little to know what that is yet.
Fiona: [shifts Jake up to her shoulder and rubs his back gently, and it's a few minutes before he's quiet again] There we go. No harm done.
Derek: [sits up a bit, reaching over to rub Liam's back] See, you're good.
Liam: [nods] Okay. I don't want to break my brother, you know.
Fiona: You didn't break him. Everything is new and his options at this point are either gurgle or cry. [glances over to Liam] Wanna hold him?
Liam: ... Yeah?
Fiona: [nods before slowly shifting him over] Make sure you support his head - try to use your arm to keep him in a straight line.
Derek: [will move with Liam to get him against the headboard, and help get the baby into the right position] Remember how you had to be careful with your little cousins right after they were born, same here.
Liam: I got it. [and he's going to be very protective, cradling the baby carefully] Hey little brother.
Jake: [will just stare up owlishly at him, blinking as he shoves his fist in his mouth to gnaw on.]
Liam: I'm going to be the one to teach you all about lacrosse, and video games, and making sure your sister doesn't dress you in princess dresses like mine did.
Derek: [moves to lean near Fiona, rubbing her back]
Fiona: [just smiles softly as she leans into Derek, before shifting a bit . She's probably going to pass out again, so her boys can continue to chat around her, she won't mind.]
Derek: [they will, until Liam gets a text from Landon and he gives Jake back to Derek, kisses Fiona's cheek gently not to wake her up, and heads off home, leaving Derek against the headboard, one arm wrapped around his wife, the other holding his son and the happiest wolf ever]
Kieran: [and the rest of the hospital will mostly leave them alone until it's getting to be the end of the day, and he'll poke his head in before Melissa can beat him to it] Hey, dude. Visiting hours are almost up.
Derek: Yeah, I figured. [waves for Kieran to come closer] Come meet Jake.
Kieran: [makes his way closer letting one hand brush against the top of his sister's head as he leans over to have a look] There's another little Winston Churchill.
Derek: [snorts] Ignore your uncle, Jake. He thinks he's funny.
Kieran: Correction - I am funny, your dad just doesn't appreciate my peculiar sense of humor.
Derek: However, he is also the reason you're not named Samuel, so you can thank him for that later if you want.
Kieran: You're welcome.
Derek: [is going to nudge Fiona a bit] Baby, visiting hours are almost up... [not that he doesn't know how to sneak back in later]
Fiona: [she stirs quietly, blinking up and smiling when she sees her big brother] Hey you.
Kieran: [smiles right back] Hey yourself. [leans forward to kiss her cheek] You did good.
Fiona: [closes her eyes at the touch] Thanks.
Derek: Do you want to rest for the night away from all of us, or do you want me to sneak back in later?
Fiona: [she pauses for a moment, before shaking her head] I'll be okay. Go home and sleep.
Derek: If you're sure. Just call if you change your mind. [leans in to kiss her]
Fiona: [kisses him back with a nod] I will. [she won't. Derek needs all the sleep he can get because there won't be much once the baby comes home]
Derek: [and he's going to kiss Jake's head and tuck the baby back safely in Fiona's arms] I love you both. I'll bring you a real breakfast in the morning.
Fiona: I love you a lot. [and she'll just take Jake as Kieran gets ready to walk out with Derek]
Derek: [goes to leave] I'm probably going to just stay with Lucy at my mom's tonight. Less upheaval bringing her home only to take her back the next morning. You okay with Liam and Landon on your own?
Kieran: I think I can handle two teenage boys. Tell your mom I said hi.
Derek: I will. [and he's going to head to the Hale House. He had taken a photo of Liam and Jake and a few of Jake in his arms while Fiona had been sleeping to be ready to show people]
Talia: [Lucy is being fussy so Talia is sitting on the porch with her, rocking her in one of the chairs while the toddler curls up into her shoulder]
Derek: [drives up and looks at his mother and daughter on the porch, smiling] Please tell me I didn't miss dinner.
Talia: There's leftovers in the fridge. We had to eat a little early. [Lucy sees her dad and starts reaching for him instantly, pretty much in a state of not happy] I think she might be coming down with something, she's been miserable all afternoon.
Derek: Hopefully it's not a case of the terrible twos. [picks her up and snuggles his daughter close] Should I go over to Laura’s and see if Jason can see her?
Talia: [she shakes her head] She's not running a fever, so I don't think it's anything too serious. [Lucy buries her face in her father's shoulder, holding on as tight as her little one year-old arms can]
Derek: [rubs her back a bit] Maybe she just needs some snuggle time and sleep. I can do that. Hopefully the leftovers I can eat with one hand.
Talia: [nods as she gets up from the chair] I'll fix you a plate.
Derek: [follows her in] I have pictures on my phone for you.
Talia: [smiles] Good. How did everything go?
Derek: Perfectly. Fiona's fine, awake and smiling like I haven't seen her smile since we mated. And Jake is so tiny, but just so perfect.
Talia: Good. I was hoping her spirits would pick up once she had the baby.
Derek: Yeah. I think she was just too nervous to let herself be happy. But the way her face lit up... I think we're finally good.
Talia: Good.
Derek: [goes to sit, using one hand to pull up the pictures, starting at the one with Liam and Jake] And we did choose a name. Jacob Tyler.
Talia: Jacob Tyler Hale. I like it.
Derek: So do we. Liam's already making plans on being the big brother.
Talia: Good. [finishes fixing him the plate and places it down in front of him] It sounds like everything is working out well, then.
Derek: Yeah. [and he's going to eat with one hand, the other just holding Lucy against his shoulder] Mind if I crash here tonight? I figure it's easier than dragging Lucy back and forth.
Talia: [she shakes her head] That's fine. I set her up in one of the guest rooms if you want to share.
Derek: Yeah, that's fine. Fi is going to be there a few days because of the surgery. Kieran is staying to help care for her a bit longer.
Talia: [she nods] I'm sure she'll need the extra hand, at least starting out. Did you manage to get any leave time from school?
Derek: Yeah, I've got about two weeks of sick time on top of the week paternity leave I get. Scott's going to cover my classes and I've been helping prepare him.
Talia: [eyebrows raise, amused] Scott teaching English?
Derek: With a very detailed set of cliff notes on what to discuss. He even reread the two books to be able to know the stories.
Talia: That's good, at least.
Derek: [he's going to finish his plate of food and then yawn, because it's been a long, stressful day]
Talia: [small smile as she reaches for his plate. Lucy is asleep against his shoulder at this point] Go. Sleep. You can tell me more in the morning.
Derek: [nods, and he's off to do just that, getting Lucy settled first, then himself. He's going to send the large e-mail to all the family packs first though with the full update on the baby's name, stats, Fiona's status, and pictures before passing out on the bed]
Talia: [and there will be congratulatory emails waiting for him in the morning]
