new york wolves } { of fugitive recovery and keeping your distance

Dean: [walks into the precinct and makes a beeline right for Flack's office, saying he needs to talk to the wolf that's involved as well as get any information about the crime scene. Flack will then reroute him to the tech room to look over the evidence while he waits for Derek to show up]

Derek: [ and he looks like a man who didn't sleep well as he arrives with Beckett since he is doing as his sister asks and promises not to be alone.] Thank god for coffee and bagels.

Flack: [catches sight of him before tipping his head towards the door] Agent Winchester's here. He's waiting in ops.

Derek: Do you want me to go track him down then?

Flack: [nods] Said he wanted to talk to you.

Derek: Alright. [and he will go off sipping his coffee and looking for Dean]

Dean: [he isn't dressed much like your average FBI agent, in jeans, work boots and a henley but his badge is sitting on his hip as he leans against the table, replaying the surveillance video as he looks for clues. He glances over when he hears Derek coming and raises an eyebrow] You Hale?

Derek: Detective Hale, but yes, that's me. Agent Winchester?

Dean: [nods as he extends a hand to shake his] Dean. Fugitive Recovery. [he then gets up to shut the door behind him and is just going to hop right to it] Are you the alpha they're after?

Derek: [he will nod and shake his hand, and then do so, before he goes and sits on the edge of the desk] No, that would be my older sister, Laura.

Dean: [nods] I've been tracking these five sons of bitches across six states. Didn't take long to figure out their MO, especially when I heard what was left of the Hale pack was in town.

Derek: Five? I only saw four on the surveillance feed, and that giant one is new to me.

Dean: [smirks a bit] Yeah, the big guy? Is actually two alphas that can meld together and form Voltron Wolf. [shakes his head] Identical twins. Deucalion picked them up when I first caught wind of them. From what I heard the two of them were omegas, hanging out on the fringes of this pack in Colorado and Deucalion taught them how to use their talent to their advantage. Once they had that down, they cut clear through their entire pack - dropped fifteen bodies in two hours.

Derek: [his eyebrows go up] Yeah, that's not at all comforting.

Dean: [shakes his head] Granted, the pack they took out wasn't exactly the paragon of werewolf virtue, so for a while I was just mostly keeping an eye on them to see what shook out now that they were alphas, but ... the alpha pack wasn't really much better. They started dropping more bodies and I started hunting. Which, eventually, lands us here. Frankly, I'm surprised Deucalion didn't come for your sister right after the fire.

Derek: We kept our head down and make allies to keep us off radars. Pretty sure the reason they found us was the Argents stirring up trouble at us.

Dean: [makes a face] Kate or Gerard?

Derek: Both.

Dean: My sympathies.

Derek: [snorts] Yeah, let's say I'm not mourning either of them.

Dean: Not very many are. [and he says that honestly] Gerard and my old man used to roll together back in the day, but when you get too psychotic and dogmatic for John Winchester to deal with, you know you're running into a special kind of crazy.

Derek: [nods, but since they're sharing] Try dating Kate Argent.

Dean: Oh, I did. [shakes his head] Though I'm not really sure dating is what you would call it.

Derek: Did she burn down your house too? [sarcastic but serious]

Dean: No, but she did steal my car which, considering I live out of it is sort of similar. [shakes his head] That bitch was lucky I'm too principled to shoot her in the face. No one touches my baby. [so no, not even close to what Derek went through, but he's trying to lighten the tension a little]

Derek: [chuckles a bit. It's not the same, but it's enough to earn a bit of his trust] So what are you thinking so far about what they're planning?

Dean: Honestly? Not all that sure. Depends how much pressure they want to put on your sister. Deucalion likes to play a long game and while this is a big opening move ... I don't know if it's the big move.

Derek: Yeah, but how long of a game is a long game. Because those are two girls who've already gone through one too many traumatic incidents of their own.

Dean: [sighs] That I don't know. [there's a pause as he drums his fingers against the table] He's trying to get your sister to have to kill one of you, right? So what scenarios would Laura be forced into that position?

Derek: Depends - Laura was trying to figure out if she would even gain power from us since we're not her betas by bite.

Dean: Does she have any bitten betas?

Derek: Would that change how the scenarios go?

Dean: Well, it goes from them trying to get Laura to kill them to using them as leverage to kill someone that isn't family. Either she kills him or her or Deucalion kills them.

Derek: [nods, thinking a moment on how to play this] She only has one.

Dean: [pauses for a moment] This guy is a fanatic. He believes that his way is the only way and that once she kills one, that's like the gateway drug and all she'll need to kill the rest of you.

Derek: But if he wants her to do it... does that mean he won't kill my little sisters right away? That we've got time to find them?

Dean: Time, yes. But how much time depends on how patient he is and if that's the plan he's actually going with. But yeah - it doesn't gain him anything if he kills them and he's a collector - he doesn't want just any alpha he wants the cream of the alpha crop - which is why he's after your sister.

Derek: My sister... I love her to death, but she's not my mom. My mom had a rare gift. Laura doesn't have it.

Dean: She's still the Hale alpha. That comes with a hell of a lot of power and maybe he sees it as a way of getting what he couldn't get before - he and your mom were friends, right? Before he went batshit?

Derek: Yeah, they were from what everyone says. I was still a teenager.

Dean: Kali and Ennis were his friends too. Odds are he probably took this to your mother as well and since you're still alive, got shot down.

Derek: [there's a bit of a stiffening at the mention of Ennis] Yeah, pretty sure mom was a bit above killing her children.

Dean: [he nods] I guess he figured he'd try again with your sister. If loss has made her a little more ... amendable.

Derek: [snorts] My sister inherited the stubborn genes like the rest of us.

Dean: I guess it depends if he's willing to try and break her down.

Derek: I just hope for the girls’ sake he's going to play a long enough game for us to find them.

Dean: You and me both.

Derek: [deep breath] So what do we do now? You've got some way to track them?

Dean: Yeah, we got the rental. Unfortunately, the tags have it as going out of town and they turned it in somewhere outside Philly. But it's a lead, and I'm going to follow it.

Derek: And Philly is outside my jurisdiction.

Dean: Not outside of mine. But I'll keep you in the loop.

Derek: Just tell me if you need anything.

Dean: I will. [turns and extends a hand again] I'll do the best I can to bring them home. You have my word on that.

Derek: [takes it, shaking his hand] Thanks, Agent.

Dean: No problem. [hands him his card] My number if you want to check in. I may not always pick up if I'm in the field, but I'll try and call you back fast.

Derek: Thank you. You may hear also from my uncle, Peter. He's the second and Malia's father so he's rightfully anxious.

Dean: Of course. Have him call me anytime.

Derek: Thanks. [and he's going to pocket the card before pulling out his card] Here's mine.

Dean: [takes it and goes to program it into his phone] Got it.

Derek: [and he's not sure what else to say, so he's going to sit there a moment, just taking a few deep breaths to get his focus back]

Dean: [sighs as he stands next to him] Look I know this isn't easy for you guys, handing this off to someone else. But this is my job and I'm good at it. I'll find your sisters.

Derek: No, it's not easy. Just this last two years have been hard, and it's just another blow. I don't know how much more Laura can take.

Dean: [sighs as rubs the back of his neck] Yeah, that I can't answer for you. But maybe you can. She isn't just your alpha, man, she's your sister. If anyone can help her keep it together it's you.

Derek: I'm trying, but I've also go a sister out there who Kate's already kidnapped once and tortured. The only thing keeping me from going after them is that I'm not suicidal and have a healthy fear of that pack.

Dean: Well, trust me. By the time this is over, each of them are going to have a wolfsbane bullet between the eyes and that's a promise.

Derek: I can stand behind that. Thanks.

Dean: No problem.

Derek: I'll see you out.

Dean: [nods as he gathers his information and gets ready to follow him out]

Esposito: You the fed working the Hale kidnapping?

Dean: [glances up and nods] Yeah, that's me. Dean Winchester.

Esposito: [holds out his hand] Detective Esposito. Can I talk with you for a sec?

Dean: [nods as he shakes his hand] Sure. Lead the way.

Esposito: [looks to make sure Derek isn't around, and then pulls him into one of the interview rooms] I've got a bit of a personal interest in those girls, but I've been given the cold shoulder from the pack for my own good, so they say. Just wanted to know what's going on.

Dean: How much of a cold shoulder are they giving you?

Esposito: Derek feeds me some stuff, but pretty much told to stay far out of the blast zone.

Dean: With these guys that's not a bad thing. The alpha pack likes to leave bodies wherever they go.

Esposito: Yeah, problem is, Their pack? Pretty much my pack too.

Dean: [nods slowly before sighing a bit] Look, man, wolves ... everything with them is in the immediate. They fight with their claws not guns, they think that distance is safety even when that isn't always the case. I'm gonna guess that you're close with the alpha, Laura?

Esposito: Let's just say she was forty blocks away and felt me getting shot.

Dean: [deep breath] Yeah, okay, I can see why she'd want to keep you out of this. [he pauses before reaching into his bag and pulling out the pictures he has of Deucalion and his wolves] This pack is a pack of alpha werewolves, and all of them are killers. Their leader is a guy named Deucalion - he used to be pretty decent from what I know but about fifteen years back he was an idiot and thought he could make peace with Gerard Argent. Gerard ambushed him, obliterated the packmates he brought with him and took two flare arrows and used them to blind him. After that, his second got the bright idea to try and steal his power from him - Deucalion snapped and killed him.

Esposito: Yeah, I've been a guest of Gerad's 'hospitality'. Old bastard deserved what he got, you ask me. [looks at the pictures] So what makes him so scary?

Dean: When he killed his second? He found out that when you kill one of your own, you get a bit of a kick to your own power. His entire pack was dead inside a week by his own hand. Now, back then there were five big alphas in Cali - him, these two, Kali and Ennis, an sweet but scary Japanese lady named Satomi and Derek's mom, Talia Hale. Deucalion managed to talk Kali and Ennis into doing the same and joining up with Deucalion as their leader. This guy is obsessive, a fanatic. He does whatever he takes to gain more power and in order to join his pack you have to be an alpha that's killed your pack. For most alphas this probably wouldn't be a problem, but he's a perfectionist. A collector. He wants all the big names, which is where your girlfriend comes in. And he will do whatever it takes to make them feel like they have no other choice. [he smirks] The community calls him the "demon wolf." He may be blind, but he's the scariest son of a bitch I've gone up against, and I've been doing this a long time.

Esposito: Even the scariest dogs can get taken down with a well placed bullet.

Dean: Agreed. But see, werewolves don't think that way. Everything about the way they fight is up close and personal. It's all about who's stronger, who's faster, who comes out other side in one piece. They don't necessarily see the fact the only way these guys are going down is on the other end of a scope.

Esposito: Where as the scopes the one thing I'm good at. Special Forces.

Dean: See? Keeping your distance is exactly where you want to be. I just have to figure out where the hell they went with those girls.

Esposito: [thinks] I got friends in different spots from the service. Keep me in the loop, and I'll make sure you got someone covering you from a distance.

Dean: [nods] Sounds good. You got a card?

Esposito: Yeah, but you ain't calling my work line. [he pulls it out, and writes his cell on the back of it]

Dean: [nods as he takes the card, programming the number into his phone immediately] I get a solid lead, I'll let you know. I'm gonna be heading west - they got on a plane for Nevada with a layover in Des Moines, so I'm going to hit both and see what I can dig up.

Esposito: Good luck, man.

Dean: Thanks. Think I'm gonna need it. [and he will head back for Iowa]
