canon au } of maybe date and first kiss

Sheriff: [and at the last one, he scratches his nose a bit] You know, you can tell me to lay off the jokes anytime...

Jody: [shakes her head as she takes another sip of her wine] Nah. The world needs more bad jokes if you ask me. People forget to laugh these days.

Sheriff: I'll admit, the last six months? First time I felt I could. This town's just been crazy.

Jody: Yeah, well. Welcome to the supernatural. Things don't ever really slow down. That's why you have to take the little moments while you have them.

Sheriff: You're assuming that I get them.

Jody: Then you make them.

Sheriff: I'm sure once the kid is gone to college, I'll have more opportunities.

Jody: See if it were me, I'd try and get as many with him as I could before he goes.

Sheriff: Not that I don't offer. He's just, caught up in his own things.

Jody: That's a shame. But I assume that's a teenage boy for you.

Sheriff: Teenage boy with a girlfriend, his best friend being the town alpha, and for some reason he got a full ride to Berkley to study to be a cryptozoologist.

Jody: A crypto-what?

Sheriff: Cryptozoologist. It's a fancy scientist term for a scientist who studies animals that aren't supposed to exist.

Jody: So basically what Sam Winchester would have been if he was actually allowed to be well adjusted. [another sip of her wine] Nice.

Sheriff: My friend Deaton does it too. Though he's also a vet. I told Stiles that since he got a free ride for it, I'm fine but I want him to take a minor or something in a basic skill in case the whole creature scientist doesn't work out for him

Jody: Smart. Hunting does not pay the bills.

Sheriff: No, but he is getting to be a good detective. Kid just looks at things in a way no one else does.

Jody: [smirks slightly at that] Sounds like he'd be a good cop.

Sheriff: Or evil mastermind. Not sure which way he'd go yet. [laughs]

Jody: [she laughs] Well, if anything it sounds like he'd either have a built in partner or side kick. Claire said something about a kid named Scott?

Sheriff: That's the best friend slash teen alpha. I've known that kid since he was born. Goofiest little kid. You'd never think he'd be this, but he's a good kid.

Jody: They can surprise you sometimes. Especially kids who have been through stuff like this. They're tougher than they look.

Sheriff: Yeah, well sometimes it feels like it was only yesterday I was dragging them out of inflatable castles.

Jody: [her eyes go a little distant for a moment, before she nods] They grow up fast. [And then they're gone]

Sheriff: [he reached over and put his hand on top of hers, squeezing it gently]

Jody: [glances up and gives him a small smile] Sorry. Got away from me for a second. [but she shakes it off and gets up slightly] Going to go in for thirds? [referring to his plate]

Sheriff: Nah, you've got two teenagers who probably are going to come home at midnight and raid the fridge. Give them some of this amazing meal.

Jody: [nods and she'll start collecting the plates to take to the sink as well as put things away] I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Sheriff: I did. Thank you for offering to. I'll have to try and cook next time.

Jody: Sure. And I don't mind. I've gotten used to cooking for myself, it's kind of nice to cook for someone else sometimes.

Sheriff: Well, at least let me help do the dishes. [gets up to go help]

Jody: I will never say no to a man willing to do the dishes.

Sheriff: [laughs as he takes up a towel] So where are the girls tonight?

Jody: Claire is taking some kind of test to determine what classes she should be taking when she goes back to school in the fall and Alex doesn't tell me so much where she's going beyond "out" and "be back by curfew."

Sheriff: At least she's back by curfew?

Jody: [considers for a moment before raising her hand and tipping it back and forth as though to say "so-so"]

Sheriff: Probably better at it than my son ever was

Jody: Alex's a good kid, and I know she's loyal. But hell if she doesn't like to push her limits.

Sheriff: You should be grateful Stiles is going to be four hours away soon. They'd probably enable each other into more trouble than you care for.

Jody: [she laughs] We'll see how that goes. They still have a whole summer to get through.

Sheriff: True. But he's a good kid, so he shouldn't get her into too much trouble.

Jody: He seems like it. You guys did pretty well on your own.

Sheriff: Well, we weren't really alone. Melissa and I took turns helping each other.

Jody: Melissa - that's Melissa McCall?

Sheriff: Yes. Scott's mother. She's a head nurse over at the hospital. Her husband is an FBI agent but they separated back when Scott was maybe four? She and my wife were best friends.

Jody: [she nods slowly, as she brings over the dishes, and tipping her head to the side] And you two are still ... close?

Sheriff: We are. I'm pretty sure the boys have been trying to maneuver us into dating for years, but it's just never felt right, you know?

Jody: [well that's good news for her at any rate] Yeah, I get that. Some people are just meant to be friends.

Sheriff: Yeah. The kids would probably say she was my be ef ef or something.

Jody: [she laughs] Not a bad thing to have. [there's another pause as she moves to lean against the other side of the sink as he cleans up, finishing off the last of her wine] But what about ... other girlfriends? Anything there?

Sheriff: [chuckles, and he might flush a bit] No, I've been pretty much absent from the playing field. Stiles took up most of my time. He was a very hyperactive kid.

Jody: That's a smart choice. The playing field is a lot more like a minefield these days.

Sheriff: Well, this town isn't as big as most others. Half the people here have been here for generations, so they know everyone.

Jody: So was Sioux Falls. Didn't stop me from trying online dating.

Sheriff: Yeah, I kept thinking about it, but again, time.

Jody: [shakes her head] Don't. Trust me. Just ... don't.

Sheriff: [eyebrow up] That bad?

Jody: [she nods] You don't want to know.

Sheriff: Oh, now you're really making me curious.

Jody: [sighs] Some demon used my online profile to get close to me to get revenge against the boys. I wound up coughing up blood in the bathroom before the attack dogs got called off.

Sheriff: [nods] That is probably the best reason not to date at all.

Jody: Yeah, but ... can't help myself. I'd rather take a risk with all the terrible dates than wind up alone and crazy.

Sheriff: Well, I can probably introduce you to Melissa and she can give you all the warnings about the men in town so you can be better prepared.

Jody: [she glances up at him for a moment, watching him out of the corner of her eye before she turns to face him more] And what if I already had someone in mind?

Sheriff: Oh? [he looks over, curious and .... maybe hopeful?]

Jody: [she'll hold that eye contact, taking another step closer] Yeah. One of those classically handsome types. I'm a bit of a sucker for those.

Sheriff: Oh really? And what is your definition of classically handsome?

Jody: Good strong chin, sharp features but not too sharp. Good smile.

Sheriff: [snorts a bit, smiling] Let me guess, looks damn good in uniform?

Jody: The uniform is definitely a requirement. [she grins] I like a man who's aged well.

Sheriff: Well, I can think of one candidate who might match that description. He's a bit rusty though.

Jody: I don't mind rusty. I'm not exactly well-practiced either.

Sheriff: Thing is, the guy's usually so caught up in everything around him, he doesn't tend to catch the obvious until it pretty much slaps him in the face.

Jody: So you're saying I should take the initiative?

Sheriff: Pretty much. So that way you make your intentions clear.

Jody: [nods as she considers for a moment, before deciding to just jump and see what happens.] Let me know how you think this will work. [and she'll just lean in slowly to kiss him, letting one hand rest against his chest as she does]

Sheriff: [and he will lean down to meet her, kissing her back with a smile on his lips. He hadn't been sure, the way Jody danced around it without saying it right out. But he was hoping in a way he hadn't in a long time, and it felt good. It felt right, and his hand slid up to cup her cheek as they kissed]

Jody: [well, technically he is her boss. She doesn't want to just be that brazen about it. but the way he's responding definitely is giving her reason to believe she wasn't just making it up on her end. She leans into his hand and just holds the kiss for as long as she can. She's hasn't felt this good about something like this in a long time]

Sheriff: [and it's been a long time since someone has wanted to be intimate with him like that. It takes him a moment to remember how to reciprocate and then he melted into her, his free hand sliding around her waist to gently pull her closer]

Jody: [her wine glass gets placed to the side and her arms slide around his neck, her hand brushing against the back of his neck as she takes another step closer]

Sheriff: [and he's going to kiss her a moment longer, and then lean his head back a bit, looking into her eyes]

Jody: [glances back up at him with a smirk] Not bad for someone who's rusty.

Sheriff: Thanks. I have a feeling I'm going to need to rewrite the office policy on internal relationships...

Jody: [laughs] Well, I think we can keep it to ourselves for now.

Sheriff: I think I'd like that.

Jody: Okay. Then we'll just ... feel it out. See what happens.

Sheriff: [nods] I'd like that.

Jody: Me too.

Sheriff: [nods, smiling as he licks his lips] And in an effort to not ruin this before we get going, I think I should probably head out.

Jody: I can respect ending on a high note. We'll ... make plans for another dinner.

Sheriff: I've got off in two days. Think that's enough time?

Jody: I think I can make that work.

Sheriff: I'll bring dessert.

Jody: Perfect. I like chocolate.

Sheriff: I'll make sure I remember that.

Jody: Good. [and she'll go to walk him out]

Sheriff: [and before they open the door, he may just lean down to get another kiss from her]

Jody: [she definitely will not mind that and kiss him back, nice and slow]

Sheriff: [and it'll last a minute before he's pulling back an inch, smiling as his hand rubs along her arm] I'll see you at the station tomorrow.

Jody: [nods with a small smile] See you tomorrow.

Sheriff: [and out he will go, smiling to himself all the way home]

Jody: [And she will finish cleaning up the kitchen and get ready for the girls to come home to give her crap]
