puppy love } { of CONTROL and recruitment styles
Stiles: [who needs to follow her. He just cloned one of his instructor's keycards and managed to figure out their password to log in and see if he can get a facial recognition match on her]
Hayley: [yeah, there's not much actually there. there's fleeting images of her on security cameras from ... ten offices of Kingmaker Land Development, Inc., the last of which went up like a giant fireball in the end]
Stiles: [and he will figure out a day, and track her facial recognition on those security cameras to see where she goes]
Hayley: [Coffee, lunch, nondescript office buildings, a bar for dinner, and then she disappears because when it comes to her daughter she won't let anyone track her and ... may sneak out of the bar as a wolf rather than a human, not that Stiles would see that as most of the cameras are on the storefront of the bar]
Stiles: [no, but a wolf in the streets of DC would eventually get noticed since, you know, wolves are not native to that region. And he will take notes on this]
Hayley: [... it's not like she's striding into the town as a wolf - she generally sticks to the woods as she probably has Hope hiding in a cabin somewhere when she's not at school]
Stiles: [so Virginia. But he will eventually decide to get coffee at the same place she does in the morning]
Hayley: [and she will see him at the table and smirk a bit, before ordering her coffee and her favorite danish before moving to sit across from him] You figured this place out faster than I thought.
Stiles: Yeah, well it's got the best [whatever her favorite drink is] in the city.
Hayley: True. It does. But considering you live ten miles across town, I'm surprised you're getting your coffee here.
Stiles: I like to change things up. Shop small businesses.
Hayley: Mmmm. See the thing about people is they don't shop this far out of their way unless they're looking for something.
Stiles: I was looking for a good cup of coffee. [and he will sip his]
Hayley: Hmmm. [there's a beat] I'm Hayley, by the way.
Stiles: Hayley Marshall, originally from New Orleans. [and he will scroll his phone through the open file of his]
Hayley: [she laughs] Well, close. Andrea LaBonair was from New Orleans. I was adopted when I was still a baby.
Stiles: Just because it's not the name you go by doesn't mean it's not where you were born.
Hayley: True. Stiles Stilinski of Beacon Hills.
Stiles: Touche. So why don't we just cut to the chase and you tell me why you've been watching me for the last two weeks.
Hayley: [nods once before grabbing her cup and getting to her feet] Follow me.
Stiles: And why should I do that?
Hayley: Because you could go back to the farm, train for whatever they ask of you and work in the narrow focus of the real world, or you can come with me and figure out the benefits from being from a town like Beacon Hills.
Stiles: Pretty sure that is ziltch, but you're welcome to make an argument. [and he will grab his coffee and follow]
Hayley: [she'll lead the way out onto the sidewalk and starts walking away from the crowd] So when I say "werewolf," you say ...
Stiles: Howl?
Hayley: I'm serious, Stiles. [and she'll glance around before her eyes will flash gold, but they go a step further, veins under her eyes darkening, and if her mouth was open he would probably see her fangs drop] When I say werewolf, you think ...
Stiles: [yup, not phased] Ex-girlfriend.
Hayley: [and her eyes go back to normal] I know. I'm what happens when you take a werewolf and a vampire and mix 'em together. And the agency I work for is looking to build a team that deals with supernatural threats specifically.
Stiles: So you're looking for hunters?
Hayley: Yes and no. Not in your case. We do need some hunters because some threats out there are dangerous, but they usually know how to track us by the mess we leave behind. I need someone who knows people - which is where you come in.
Stiles: Well, I already have a good job lined up.
Hayley: Ten to one mine has better toys.
Stiles: Well, I've walked with you this far.
Hayley: [and she grins at him as she walks over to one of the statues, opening up a pinpad and pushing a few buttons. As she does, a spiral staircase opens at the base of it and she gestures to him to lead] After you.
Stiles: [his eyebrows go up, but he just sips his coffee. He's been working on these straight face skills really hard, ok?] You have a permit for that staircase? [he will move to start going down]
Hayley: You'll have to take that up with the chief. I don't ask those kinds of questions. [and she'll follow him down to the next door with the retinal scans which she will pass them through]
Stiles: So what, you're just the messenger?
Hayley: Sort of. He wants to form a team, and he wants me to head it. In return, he's going to help me find something I need. Win-win.
Stiles: And what is it you need?
Hayley: [she takes a deep breath, considering for a moment, before deciding that she needed to lead with the big play. Allison wants to legitimize her family's legacy, Matt will do it simply because he doesn't trust Hayley, but Stiles needs something real] To save my daughter's father.
Stiles: From what?
Hayley: A long story. One that needs a much stronger beverage of choice.
Stiles: Fair enough. [looks around where they are standing] And why did he send you to recruit me?
Hayley: He didn't. Well, not you specifically. But he gave me a list of people they were thinking about recruiting anyway, and told me I could take my pick. Small team, all supernatural cases, and you'll still be doing the same stuff you would be at the CIA - just the less publicized ops.
Stiles: So why out of everyone did you pick me?
Hayley: Beacon Hills and the Hales give you enough of a brush with the supernatural that you understand it, but at the heart of it all, you're a sheriff's kid. You get people, and you'll see the supernatural creatures that we deal with as people. Some of them are monsters, that much is true - but they need to be humanized just as much as the human players do - and we need someone who has done that in the past.
Stiles: ... What's in it for me?
Hayley: [she smirks] As I said - [and with that she punches in the access code and opens the door to the main area of CONTROL, showing the agents milling about and talking amongst themselves] - we have really cool toys. And you'd basically be doing the same thing you were doing at the CIA.
Stiles: [and he will just walk in and look around, seeing the agents, the techs testing out gadgets with them...] ... Okay, so it's kinda cool.
Hayley: See? [she grins before gesturing for him to follow her, heading towards one of the closed rooms on the other side of the bullpen] And you already know most of the team. [and then she will open a door to reveal Allison, who is sitting at the table in the middle, drumming her fingers against the table, still in her FBI suit, and Matt, who is probably sulking against the wall]
Allison: [blinks in surprise] Stiles?
Stiles: Allison?
Matt: Stilinski.
Stiles: [looks to Hayley] Seriously?
Hayley: Allison's family knows a shit ton about the supernatural, and she's here to help fill in the gaps where my knowledge is so so. Shapeshifters like werecoyotes and nagual? Definitely not my thing. [and she flashes Matt a thin smile] And Matt and I go way back.
Stiles: You have my sympathies.
Hayley: But - Matt is a life long resident of vampire town, aka Mystic Falls, Virginia. He rounds your experience in Werewolf Town.
Stiles: If you're about to tell me that Matt completes me, I'm walking out of here on principle alone.
Hayley: [smirks] Hey, you said it, I didn't.
Allison: [huffs] Please do not walk out of here on principle.
Matt: I'm fine with you walking out. I'll even hold the door.
Stiles: Shut up, Matt.
Hayley: Now. We all work together to pick the cases, but since this team was my idea, I'm the one who calls the shots, and I'm the one you report to. There are some cases that I may pick that I'll overrule you on for personal reasons, but I'm not here to be some kind of dictator. We'll work in pairs - Argent and Donovan and me and Stilinski, since those seem to be the pairs least likely to wind up killing each other. You get a way better benefits package than you would at any of the other agencies you're applying to and basically you'll be getting to save the world. That's what you signed up to do, right?
Stiles: Technically I signed up for the CIA so I wouldn't run into Scott's dad, but sure.
Hayley: [sighs] What about you two?
Allison: [she glances over to Stiles, then nods] I'm in.
Matt: Someone needs to stick around and help take over when you screw this up. [to Hayley]
Hayley: Thanks for the vote of confidence, Donovan. [and she nods] Good. I'll get Bruce and Lloyd to take you through orientation.
Stiles: so... this means we're not going back to the farm anymore?
Hayley: No. Or Quantico, in Allison's case. Welcome to CONTROL.
