d&d scenes } { of walkabouts and goodbyes

Ric: [after getting all his affairs in order, including electing a person to run both the homeless shelter and the clinic while he's gone, he packs a bag of clothes and supplies at his apartment and dumps it into his car. He then heads to the institute to get other supplies--weapons, travel rations, etc--and say goodbye. He runs into Fie and Draco outside his room, then he goes in search of Donna, backpack slung over his shoulder.]

Donna: [is just finishing up with the two friends she made in Despayr. On the one hand, they've been gone too long that a lot of things have changed in their absence, but on the other given that their species are generally long-living, there's a chance that their family is still around. Donna gives them whatever information she can before sending them off and notices Ric with a smile] Oh, hello. Everything alright?

Ric: [and he'll smile back, shifting his grip on his bag] Truthfully, no. But I'm not sure anyone expects me to be anyway.

Donna: True enough, I suppose. Anything I can do?

Ric: Actually, there is. [and he will hold out his keys to the building] These are the master keys to the Institute and the clinic. I sent you an encrypted email earlier with all the security passwords... including the ones that override the ones you already know.

Donna: [frowns as she takes it] Are you going somewhere?

Ric: Yeah. I... I'm no good to anyone right now. I fell back into Shar's thrall the moment we set foot in Despair, and with everything that happened, I don't really feel like I know who I am anymore, or who I want to be. I know what I don't want to be, so I need to get my head clear and figure out the rest. So I'm taking a walkabout... well, a driveabout, but same thing.

Donna: [nods slowly] I understand. I hope it helps.

Ric: You're the only one i really trust here to take care of the place. I'll be back, but until then, the place is yours.

Donna: I'll take good care of it, then.

Ric: You can call me if you need anything. Or if, you know, the rest of the team is heading off to certain doom and I should come rescue you. [smirks]

Donna: [she laughs] If that's the case, you should probably bring back up.

Ric: Well, we'll see if I make any friends while I'm traveling.

Donna: [she nods] And don't forget to call us if you're in trouble.

Ric: I will. And I'll text you updates from the road. Don't hesitate to text me if you need anything.

Donna: [she nods] But don't worry about us too much. We'll be fine.

Ric: I know.

Donna: This is important, Ric. Focus on you.

Ric: I plan on it. [rubs the back of his neck] I, uh, asked Draco's uncle to destroy the two temples to Shar that Lammel and I had. Gave him back the portal stone too. So it's a good start.

Donna: That is a good start. I'll help if I can.

Ric: I know. And I appreciate it. I appreciate just, everything you've done to help me.

Donna: Happy to help. It's what I'm here for.

Ric: [nods, because he sees her as more than just someone at the institute] So I'll see you soon. Don't let Jake and Draco start another battle with Shar.

Donna: Can't make any promises there. They don't consult me before they do things.

Ric: That's true. And hey, when I get back, maybe you'll let me take you out for lunch and tell you everything that happened?

Donna: I'd like that.

Ric: [smiles] me too. So don't get pulled into a different dimension or anything, okay?

Donna: Don't worry. That's not the plan.

Ric: [and he'll grin, give her a salute, then make his way out to hit the road]
