spamalot } { of spider-man and potential futures
Derek: [is setting up the evening the right way. There's a few pizzas, popcorn, sodas, and a selection of movies queued up. There's also ice cream in the fridge, and his mom is over at Peter's for the evening and Laura and Jason are talking to Fiona about the loft. So he's just waiting for Cora to join him for their sibling night.]
Cora: [makes her way down the stairs and plops down on the cushions glancing over to him with a grin] What have we got?
Derek: Two meatlovers, one with extra cheese, one of those boxes should be full of breadsticks, enough snacks and sodas for a small army, and the entire marvel movie franchise DVDs to pick from. Sound good, or you want something else to watch?
Cora: [shakes her head as she reaches for one of the pizza boxes] Works for me.
Derek: So do we want to go more towards Avengers, X-Men or Spiderman?
Cora: [she takes a deep breath as she considers] Which Spider-Man?
Derek: The newer one.
Cora: Spider-Man.
Derek: Alright then. [gets up to put the DVD in, then flops back on the couch next to her, loading up a plate for himself]
Cora: [finishes her plate then settles back on the couch next to him, shifting so that she's sitting cross-legged on the couch. He'll probably figure out why Spider-Man is her favorite a few minutes in, but that's a conversation for another time]
Derek: So how was school this week?
Cora: [she shrugs] It's almost finals, so we're not really doing much.
Derek: You think you're ready for them?
Cora: [she nods] I can't wait until senior year. I get straight A's all year, and I don't have to take any of my finals.
Derek: Yeah, and you'll be doing the SAT and the whole college application thing. You guys thinking about visiting some places over the summer?
Cora: I don't know. Maybe?
Derek: You can all road trip out to me for a weekend and see Georgetown.
Cora: [she smirks a bit] You think Peter would let us go alone, just the five of us?
Derek: if you're coming directly to me and Fiona? Probably. Though Mom and Peter could use an excuse to get out of town. Let Laura hold down the fort for a weekend.
Cora: Mom would probably rather have the empty house, to be honest.
Derek: True.
Cora: [she pauses] I don't think Peter's ready to let Malia go across the country without him. But he might chaperone?
Derek: And then I will distract him.
Cora: [she smirks] If you're distracting Peter, who's going to give us the tour?
Derek: ...... Okay, I'll have Fiona distract Peter.
Cora: Sounds good. [actually, that will be Nadia. And Nadia will do it happily.]
Derek: So then we at least have a plan. I'll see what I can work on my end, and you guys can all come visit me.
Cora: Good. [it'll be fun. And if Peter's going, there at least stands a chance of the sheriff and Melissa letting Stiles, Scott and Isaac go.]
Derek: And you know, if just you want to come out for a weekend too.
Cora: [she glances back to him and nods] We'll see. I should probably let you get settled first, though.
Derek: Yeah, by the time we reach DC with the trailer, I'll have to unpack and then start right in on helping assist in classes.
Cora: [she nods] What will you be teaching?
Derek: Basic freshman classes. History 101. But I'll assist the professors in the undergrad writing and history classes too.
Cora: Sounds like your dream job.
Derek: Pretty much. I'm really excited. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Cora: Good. I'm glad. [she just wishes it wasn't so far away]
Derek: And in three years, when I come back I can probably get a job teaching here at the high school.
Cora: [eyebrow raise] Really? You want to teach at Beacon Hills High?
Derek: I want to come back home and be with my family. I want to teach. So it would be the obvious choice.
Cora: [she nods a bit] At least I'll have graduated by then.
Derek: Another reason why I can't do it this year.
Cora: Yeah, you try and boss me around enough as it is.
Derek: I would be professional if I was your teacher.
Cora: You'd still be my teacher.
Derek: I'd be better than Harris.
Cora: .... True
Derek: But you won't ever have to worry about it. Unless you got into one of my classes in the next few years at Georgetown.
Cora: Assuming I even want to go to Georgetown.
Derek: Assuming. I'm already figuring that you'll all end up in Stanford or Berkeley.
Cora: [she waves her hands] Maybe I'll go to neither. Maybe I'll just go to UCLA.
Derek: There's nothing wrong with UCLA.
Cora: I don't even know what I want to major in yet.
Derek: You don't actually have to know when you leave for college, you know. You can start with just liberal arts, and declare a major in your first two years.
Cora: But if I don't know what I want to do, how do I know if I'm going to the right school?
Derek: There are a lot of "right schools" Cora. What makes it right though is that it's a place you are able to grow into yourself at. You do something that interests you, make friends, form relationships, and just get to figure yourself out in while not having the rest of us around trying to tell you what to do.
Cora: [she shrugs] I don't even want to think about it right now.
Derek: You've got time. And remember, you also have the choice of not going to college.
Cora: [raises her eyebrows at him] Peter will kill me.
Derek: Because of Malia?
Cora: Because I have the chance and I'm not taking it.
Derek: If you want to take a year or two off to figure it out before you go, I think he'll understand.
Cora: I just don't want to disappoint him.
Derek: I think if you do something you don't want to do, or don't feel you're ready for, I think peter will be the last to complain. He wants you to experience life.
Cora: [she nods. he's right but there's still that feeling that she wouldn't be doing things the right way, and she hates that feeling]
Derek: You could always spend time backpacking across Europe. I'd love to do that myself. I bet Stiles and Scott would go with you.
Cora: No, their parents would actually kill them for not going to college. Besides, I feel like Stiles already knows exactly where he wants to go and what he wants to study.
Derek: What's that?
Cora: I don't know. We haven't really talked about it but he always has a plan.
Derek: I'd have thought Scott would go on to veterinary school. He seems to enjoy working with Deaton.
Cora: Maybe. Scott isn't really the kind of kid who thinks too far ahead until he has to.
Derek: So I've noticed. And Isaac will end up following the rest of you. Or Malia, at least.
Cora: [she drums her fingers against her leg] That's the other thing. I want to make sure I don't just follow everyone else where they're going.
Derek: Well, it looks like you've got a lot to figure out for yourself this summer.
Cora: [she nods] Guess I do.
Derek: And you can always call me. Malia seems to be embarrassed that I don't own a laptop for you to skype me on.
Cora: She doesn't understand that you're really committed to the technological Stone Age.
Derek: I like things that are durable and won't die if I accidently drop it.
Cora: The laptops these days are not that fragile.
Derek: Well, when the desktop dies, I'll look into it.
Cora: [she nods, turning her attention back to Peter Parker]
Derek: [and he's watching and eating]
Cora: [and they watch that and a few more movies until the pizza is gone and Cora is nodding off against his shoulder]
Derek: [is probably going to end up nodding off as well, slumped back into the couch]
Talia: [comes home to find her two younger children asleep on the couch, and she smirks a bit, before making her way over and shaking Derek's shoulder lightly]
Derek: [stirs, blinking awake] Hey Mom.
Talia: Hey. I figured you guys might want to sleep upstairs.
Derek: [looks at Cora, then nods] Good idea. [sees table] Need to clean up first.
Talia: [shakes her head] I've got this. You get some sleep.
Derek: [nods and nudges Cora] Pup, wake up. Time to go upstairs.
Cora: Mmmm? [she blinks her eyes open, before giving her mom a smile. Then she starts to push to her feet] 'Kay.
Derek: [goes upstairs, and basically just guides Cora to his room because it's never been odd of them just sleeping in a pile on his bed at any stage of their lives]
Cora: [she doesn't fight him, stumbling forward when she sees the bed and just curling up on her side to give him room]
Derek: [doesn't really need to have his eyes open. Just flops onto the bed, arm splayed over Cora, and he's out like a light]
Cora: [she feels him settle next to her and it's not long before she's back out again as well, falling easily into a deep sleep]
