Derek: [and he's probably reading some book]
Liam: [watches them both, and nope, he's not good at waiting for the right time] Dad, why do you have blue eyes and everyone else has yellow eyes. Well, except grandma, but she's the alpha so I know why she has different eyes.
Derek: [he looks over at Fiona, then closes his book. Thank you so much, Nik, for the pre-warning. But he focuses on his son with a small smile] It's because I did something when I was your age that took a toll on me, and it changed my eyes.
Liam: ... Did you kill someone?
Fiona: [is just going to hover with the baby until she's needed. she knows the story, she's just there for moral support]
Derek: [licks his lips, then nods] I did. [and he goes to tell the story of Paige and his choices and what happened to her] I didn't want her to suffer, so I did the only thing I could to stop her pain.
Liam: And that changed your eye color?
Derek: [nods] Your uncle Peter says that when you take someone's life, you lose a part of your soul and it becomes cold, like ice. Which is why it turns blue.
Liam: ... Can if ever turn back?
Fiona: [shakes her head] No. It's something you have to learn to live with.
Liam: Oh. So you can never get that part of your soul back?
Derek: No, but you move on, and you find things to fill in that space so you don't notice it missing.
Liam: Is that why you don't let me do some stuff?
Derek: No, I do that because I'm your father and I don't want to see you hurt. But I do worry that sometimes you are a bit too much like me lately in hiding inside yourself.
Fiona: Nine times out of ten, we tell you no for your own safety.
Liam: But sometimes you guys make me feel like I can't do anything.
Fiona: I know. I remember sixteen well.
Liam: You guys need to let me make some mistakes too.
Derek: You gotta understand, Liam... we just want the best for you. But we're also aware you're not going to listen and go off to get into your own kind of trouble. We both did it too.
Fiona: And then some.
Derek: Just... if you really want something, you need to tell us. You aren't a little kid anymore, you're becoming an adult. But you stop talking to us, we don't know what to do.
Liam: [sighs] Can you start teaching me to drive them?
Fiona: [sighs] When do you get your permit?
Liam: If you let me sign up for Driver's Ed at school, I can get it next semester. Otherwise I can't until I'm 17 and a half without driver's ed.
Fiona: ... Driver's Ed isn't mandatory?
Derek: In California it is until you're 6 months from turning eighteen, then it's not.
Fiona: So it should be scheduled for you. You don't need us to do that.
Liam: I need a parental permission slip signed to be able to sign up. [he points over at the fridge where it's sitting next to the doctor appointment cards for Lucy and Fiona]
Derek: [gets up and goes to look at the fridge] Liam, this is a permission form for the DMV for your permit. You don't need to get this signed until after you finish the class and you're ready for the written exam]
Fiona: So relax, kiddo. You're not falling behind anyone else.
Liam: So I can take the class?
Derek: You can take the class. Just talk to your teachers when you're back at school next week.
Liam: [smiles]
Fiona: [small smile as she scoops up Lucy] Don't be in such a rush to grow up, okay? Being a grown up isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Derek: Jobs, responsibility... just enjoy being a teenager a little longer.
Liam: [nods] Okay.
Fiona: I'm gonna go get your sister dressed. You good?
Liam: Um, one thing. [his fingers played on the table] I um... you guys love me, right? No matter what?
Derek: [eyes Fiona a moment, then nods] Of course we do.
Fiona: No matter what.
Liam: [deep breath] So if I um... if I thought I was gay…you wouldn't throw me out on the street and hate me, right?
Derek: [snorts] of course we wouldn't, Liam.
Fiona: Have you met your Uncle Cormac? I've never tried to get rid of him, what makes you think I would get rid of you?
Derek: Trust me, I've tried to get rid of your uncle for a few reasons, but none of them being because of his sexual preference. [kneels down in front of his son, putting hands on his shoulders] We love you for who you are, right now, and we always will. And we'll support you, and listen to you, and be there for you. You just have to talk to us, okay?
Liam: [nods] Okay.
Fiona: [comes up behind him and gives his shoulder a squeeze] You're stuck with us. For better or worse.
Liam: [and he's just going to hug them both] You guys are the best parents ever. I'm sorry I didn't think you'd listen to me.
Fiona: It's okay. [hugs him back] Though there's one more thing we should probably tell you, but this is a secret and you can't tell anybody else until we tell you to.
Liam: ..... Okay? [and those are worried puppy eyes]
Fiona: [deep breath, because it's still weird saying this] I'm pregnant.
Liam: [blinks] Wait... you're.... I thought you guys couldn't?
Fiona: So did we. Which is why we don't want to tell anyone yet, just in case.
Liam: I won't tell anyone, I promise. [hugs her again]
Fiona: [and she may be handing off Lucy to Derek so that she can hug him properly]
Derek: [will take Lucy easily and poke her nose] Yeah, you can't tell anyone either, got it?
Liam: [trying not to hug too tightly because he doesn't want to hurt her]
Lucy: [just grins at him]
Fiona: [is going to hug him as tight as she wants, so there.]
Liam: [you’re a human, mom. you can't hug as tight as he can. Though you sure as hell try]
Fiona: [yes she does. She tries really hard.]
Liam: You sure you aren't part wolf. [ow]
Fiona: With all the wolves in my family I might as well be.
Liam: You'd be a good wolf. Scary, but a good one.
Derek: Scary enough that I'm glad she's not. [smirks]
Fiona: [laughs, before brushing a kiss to his temple] Go be a teenager.
Liam: I will, and won't tell anyone the big secret. [goes to back away, then looks up] Can I get Uncle Cormac's e-mail address so I can talk to him?
Fiona: [she nods] It should be in my phone.
Liam: Thanks [and he's going to go take her phone and text the e-mail to his phone]
Derek: Is there anything else you need, kiddo?
Liam: No, I think that's all I got for now.
Fiona: [goes take Lucy again, and heads off to get her dressed as originally intended]
Derek: [and he's going to just... finish breakfast and then clean up the dishes]
Fiona: [eventually she will return and place Lucy in her play pen before making her way over to him and sliding her arms around his waist] How're you doing?
Derek: Good. [looks out to make sure Liam is back upstairs] That went easier than I thought it would.
Fiona: [nods a bit before letting her cheek rest against his chest] Feeling okay?
Derek: Yeah, I am. [he kissed the top of her head as he wiped his hands dry with a towel] I'm really starting to feel a lot better now, every day since our vacation.
Fiona: Good. I'm glad.
Derek: So what do you want to do today?
Fiona: I was thinking about taking Lucy over to see Cameron and Malia. She's been going a little stir crazy and I thought she could use some company.
Derek: That sounds like a good idea. [licks his lips] I was... actually thinking about seeing if Peter wanted to do some training. And bring Liam along.
Fiona: Okay. [presses a kiss to the nape of his neck] Then we're all properly occupied.
Derek: I'll see you tonight then?
Fiona: [nods] I will see you tonight. Have fun with Peter.
Derek: Give Malia my love.
Fiona: I will. [and with that she'll head off to pack up the baby and head to Malia's]
