feel the noise } { of asking out and mocking phones
Olivia: [has been informed by Elena as to what her father is supposed to do and just glances over at him as she works on her paper] Phone's not going to dial itself.
Sam: [shoots a look at Olivia] I don't know what you're talking about.
Olivia: Well, you're staring at it like you expect it to spontaneously start ringing.
Sam: I'm debating on something, that's all.
Olivia: [turns and rests her chin in her hand] Can I help?
Sam: [is his daughter... yes, she is trying to meddle in his love life again] No, I can probably handle it
Olivia: [you haven't been handling it so far, Dad. But she's going to pack up her books and get up.] Then I'm going to work in my room. Give you some private time with the phone.
Sam: [rubs his eyes because it should be him worried about her love life, not the other way around] If you need help, you can IM me. I'll have the computer up.
Olivia: [she flashes him a thumbs up before disappearing upstairs to her room]
Sam: [licks his lips and gets up to grab a beer. He opens it, takes a long drink, and keeps staring at the phone.]
Phone: [stares back. Taunting him. Teasing him. Will Sam use it or won't he?]
Sam: [damn you phone and your taunting ways. Finally he picks it up and dials Buffy's number]
Buffy: [the phone rings for a bit, but eventually there's Buffy's voice on the other end of the line] Hello?
Sam: Hey, Buffy. It's, um... it's Sam. You busy?
Buffy: [her voice instantly goes ten degrees warm] Sam, hey. No I'm just hanging out. What's up?
Sam: Not much. I just know you've been busy lately so I wasn't sure if I'd actually catch you after class...
Buffy: Nah, totally free. I'm just grabbing some dinner.
Sam: Oh, good. But if you're with someone... [he is completely awkward and out of practice with this]
Buffy: .... No. Just me.
Sam: Cool. I was... well, I was wondering if maybe you would want to have dinner one night?
Buffy: [at first there's a smile. Then there's a pause as she tries to suss out if this is the kind of dinner that she thinks it is] Have dinner?
Sam: Yeah. Just you and me... maybe a movie or something after. If you're not out hunting...
Buffy: [YES THIS IS TOTALLY WHAT SHE THINKS IT IS be cool, Buffy, be cool.] Uh, yeah, sure. That sounds like fun.
Sam: I would have asked sooner but I know you're usually working at night, and I know it means a lot to you...
Buffy: Not as much as having actual living human contact. I'm sure that Alaric and Elena can cover my patrol for the night.
Sam: Well, as long as Ben isn't in town, Elena should be able to. [seeing that Elena is part of the enabling team here]
Buffy: Great. Just let me know when and I will ask.
Sam: Would Friday be too soon?
Buffy: Friday would be perfect. I'll talk to Elena.
Sam: Great! I can pick you up at six? Any restaurant you particularly like?
Buffy: Six is good, and ... surprise me. So long as it's cooked, I'll try anything once.
Sam: Great. So Friday at six. [he sounds a bit proud of himself, and excited]
Buffy: [she's smiling warmly and he can hear it in her voice] Great. See you then.
Sam: See you then. I should go though... but, I'll see you at school too. But yeah.
Buffy: [she laughs softly] Good night, Sam.
Sam: Goodnight. [he hangs up the phone quickly, almost like it's about to explode. He gives it a minute, then gives himself a fistpump of accomplishment before he grabs his beer]
Olivia: [totally lurking and watching this, but she won't say anything. she's just pleased her dad is having a life. She'll disappear right back up to her room again]
Sam: [He is very pleased with himself. And then is texting his brother to see if he can watch Olivia on Friday because he has a date]
Olivia: [wow, Sam, she is sixteen, she can watch herself.]
Dean: [..... texts back just that] Can't she watch herself?
Sam: [text] She can, but I don't know how late I'll be.
Dean: [.....] Got a hot date or something?
Sam: Yes, matter of fact I do.
Dean: With who?
Sam: ........ Buffy Summers.
Dean: About damn time
Sam: [makes a face at his phone. Everyone teaming up against him] You don't have to stay here, just be nearby, that's all
Dean: Yeah, yeah, I'll be in town.
Sam: Thank you.
Dean: Here's hoping you get laid.
Sam: Unlike you I don't try to have sex on the first date. Which also, brings me to your son.
Dean: If you did you might be less of a pain in the ass. What about him?
Sam: Bite me. And Ben has the hots for Elena Gilbert. So you don't tell him about what you do, he's going to end up learning about the supernatural from her sooner or later.
Dean: Of course he has to date the goddamn doppelganger.
Sam: She's adorable and you know it. And a good match for him. But you know what dating her is going to put him at risk for and you're the best person to prepare him.
Dean: I promised Lisa, Sam.
Sam: You want to be the one to tell Lisa what happens when Klaus comes to town?
Dean: Klaus is Elena's problem - she should tell him.
Sam: So you're just going to let your only son stay ignorant and untrained on how to protect himself from things that go bump in the night?
Dean: You said Elena was going to tell him.
Sam: [makes strangling hands at the phone] She is, but you're his father. You should tell him. You got pissed off at me for not telling Olivia and you were right.
Dean: [there's a long pause between text messages because he knows Sam's right, but he's not going to just spring this on him] I'll talk to Lisa.
Sam: Good. I'll see you sometime this weekend then
Dean: See you then. [he pauses, staring at his phone for a moment, before switching to his contacts and calling Lisa.]
Lisa: [looks at the caller ID, and then answers the phone] Hey Dean, you just missed Ben.
Dean: Yeah, that's okay. I wanted to talk to you, actually.
Lisa: Uh oh, should I be worried?
Dean: Maybe? [he can't help but be honest about this] It's about Elena.
Lisa: The girl Ben went to see this weekend?
Dean: Yeah. [there's a pause, but he knows he needs to keep this as simple as possible] She's a hunter, Lisa.
Lisa: [there's a pause] Like you?
Dean: Yeah. Like me. And unlike me, she doesn't like to lie, especially considering she usually attracts vampires more often than not. If he's going to keep seeing her, there's some things she's going to have to tell him, and while she's said she won't say anything about me ... it's gonna come out.
Lisa: [cusses] Damnit, Dean! We had a deal. You should have kept him from meeting her if you knew about this.
Dean: I had nothing to do with it! He met her through her brother - he didn't even meet her in friggin' Iowa! And honestly, I don't think she's wrong. There're things he needs to know.
Lisa: Dean, I spent a lot of money and time to keep that boy from having repeated nightmares after that changling incident. To this day he's still got issues that I see.
Dean: And if he doesn't know what's out there, he's in more trouble. Elena deals with vampires, Lisa. Vampires who can mess with his thoughts and fuck with his head even worse than any changling ever did. And did you ever wonder if those issues are from making him think he made it all up?
Lisa: Oh yes, because my telling him that his father is a monster hunter and that's why I never knew how to reach out to him when I realized that you were his father, and that you kill things for a living was so much better to tell him.
Dean: Damnit, Lisa, this isn't about me! This is about keeping him safe.
Lisa: I'm trying to keep him safe! I'm not going to let him get in the path of monsters ever again, Dean Winchester, even if I have to break his heart to do it.
Dean: [closes his eyes] That doesn't stop them from existing. You can put him in a bubble, but they're still out there. [he sighs] So you do what you gotta do. But Elena has my blessing to tell him whatever she needs to to keep him safe. So if you have a problem with that, take it up with her.
Lisa: And when he starts having nightmares again and becomes on edge like he was back then, you can tell her it's all her fault too. Hers and yours both. [slams the phone down]
Dean: [eyes close at the slam of the phone, before pulling his phone back from his ear and clearing the screen] Yep. That went well.
Lisa: [fuming at home, trying to figure out just how she is able to tell her adult son he can't see a girl he is falling for, and just ends up crying on the couch]
Dean: [will kind of hermit in his room for the most part unless someone comes looking for him]
Sam: [had heard the last bit of that conversation and sighed, then knocked on the door] Dean?
Dean: [mumbles something under his breath] I'm fine.
Sam: So you don't need the whiskey that I brought upstairs for you?
Dean: [... well when he puts it like that] I lied.
Sam: [walks in, bringing the bottle and two tumblers and shuts the door behind him] I figured it wasn't going to go well.
Dean: I knew it wasn't going to go well. [he sits up, running a hand over his face quietly] I think she's going to make him dump her.
Sam: I'd like to see her try. he is your son, after all. [pours the whiskey into the glass and hands one to him] Plus Ben is what, 26? 27? He can make his own choices.
Dean: It's not her getting to him I'm worried about. [its her getting to Elena.]
Sam: Should I call Elena and tell her what happened so she can know what may be coming her way?
Dean: [he nods] Might be a good idea. At the same time ... I'm worried that she may cut him loose to spare him, and that isn't fair.
Sam: No, it's not. It's one of the reasons why I didn't date for the longest time.
Dean: She's been through enough shit. They both have. And this isn't just about him dating her, this is about the world in general, it's not safe. Nightmares are better than dead.
Sam: [nods] I'll admit, Dean... it was nice not having Olivia know about all this, but she is safer now knowing. It's a hard line to walk as a parent.
Dean: Yeah, well, I've drawn it. I told her that Elena's going to do what she needs to do and I won't stop her. So I guess we'll just have to see where the chips fall.
Sam: What will you do if Ben comes to you and asks about his childhood?
Dean: Tell him the truth? What else is there for me to do?
Sam: [puts a hand on Dean's shoulder] You're doing the right thing, you know.
Dean: I know. But Lisa's never going to forgive me. And she's going to hate Elena.
Sam: For now, but I don't think it's possible for anyone to hate Elena in the long term. Especially if Ben gets the support he needs to learn and understand this world to prove to Lisa that he can handle it.
Dean: [Sam gets a look that conveys Dean's doubts about this - he has a feeling that Lisa can hold a grudge]
Sam: Ben being safe and happy is the most important thing here. Everything else will fall into place, I promise.
Dean: [sighs] At least I have a benefit of knowing that it's a bomb she'll drop in person. Any idea when he's going to be in town next?
Sam: From what he told Olivia, he was going to be heading home for another week with him mom, then heading back to LA to start recording his new album. I don't think it'll be for a while unless he surprises us.
Dean: [nods] That doesn't rule out her going to see him, but I think that if she does, she'll give us a heads up.
Sam: We don't have any vacations left until Memorial Day.
Dean: Then we've got time.
Sam: Yeah. I just hope for both their sakes this doesn't tear them apart. I haven't seen Elena this happy since I've known her.
Dean: Me either.
Sam: Also, I'm thinking about restarting my search for hunters back in the area where the Originals were born. There has to be someone out there with saplings of that white oak tree.
Dean: [shakes his head] They have one. But killing them isn't an option, vamps from their line would get dead too. [He's asked Ric about this, at length] For some reason, that's not an option they're willing to take.
Sam: Probably has to do with some of the vampires Elena is friends with. And there's no other way to kill this bastard?
Dean: [shakes his head] Might be a way to at least put him out of commission. Maybe next time that Bennett witch swings around we can ask.
Sam: [nods] I was going to ask her about those rings that Ric and Jeremy have too. I was thinking of getting one for Olivia just in case, and maybe we can get Ben one.
Dean: [makes a face] Those rings have got to have a catch, man.
Sam: Ask Ric on your next bar date. [smirks]
Dean: [rolls his eyes] Yeah, I'll ask.
Sam: [yawns] alright, I need to go finish grading the last few quizzes before I crash. Want me to leave the whiskey?
Dean: [nods and takes the bottle with a thin smile. What do you think?]
Sam: [eyeroll] One day Cas is going to stop healing your liver damage.
Dean: I think I'll manage until then.
Sam: [pats his brother on the shoulder] Night, Dean.
Dean: Night, Sammy.
