Adam: [and he will be directed to the tech area where there is a scruffy looking guy sitting in front of a computer, pulling huge headphones off of his head as Stiles gets close, he flashes him a grin] Hey, you must be my interview-ee. [this gif]
Stiles: [blinks, because this was not what he was expecting, and then nods] Yeah, I guess that would be me. Unless you have more than one interview scheduled today.
Adam: Nope. Just you. [he shifts and gets up to make his way over] I'm Adam Ross. And you have a first name from a language that doesn't believe in vowels.
Stiles: And Derek warned me that you'd probably have looked into my entire life before I got here. You can call me Stiles. [holds out his hand]
Adam: [gives it a good shake] Stiles. Got it. Adam is fine. [and then he waves a hand for him to come closer] C'mon in. Roll up a chair. [every chair in this room has wheels]
Stiles: [that is going to be dangerous. But he does so, sitting down] So this place is exactly how it was described to me.
Adam: Who'd you hear from?
Stiles: Derek Hale.
Adam: Aw, yeah. Derek. Good dude. How's he doing at the twelfth?
Stiles: Doing well. Engaged to his previous partner. Do you know he can actually smile? It's kinda scary.
Adam: That ... actually sounds kind of horrifying. The first time he did it, did his face like ... crack from the effort?
Stiles: Yeah. Left wrinkle marks from the stretching of the skin in ways it normally doesn't.
Adam: [grins] Well, he's incredibly attractive, I'm sure his face will recover. [there's a beat] ... That came out wrong.
Stiles: Be careful, his fiancée can kick pretty much anyone's ass.
Adam: She can have him. Really. He is ... not my type. At all. Really. [clears throat awkwardly] Anyway! Interview. We're supposed to be talking about you. What did Derek tell you about the job?
Stiles: Pretty much that you guys don't look at the people and motives in a case, but at the physical evidence left behind to be able to feed the information to the detectives to be able to use them in their investigation.
Adam: Yes and no. A lot of the techs who work here are detectives. I, however, am not. We do a lot of the evidence processing after collection has happened, and any tech work that happens to come our way.
Stiles: [nods] Yeah, I'm not a detective. Not even a cop...
Adam: Neither am I. We do go to crime scenes sometimes, but only when they really need the hands to process the evidence.
Stiles: I'm going to be honest with you... I don't know really how to do a lot of that. I mainly did computer coding.
Adam: And we need a guy who knows computer coding. I mean, I know a lot, but since I'm advancing I get bounced around all different areas, and with advances in computer-related crimes I need a guy who can handle the tech work when I get overloaded. We can teach you proper evidence procedure. We can teach that to anyone. You can't really teach code.
Stiles: Well, that I'm good at. I can read code like Paula Dean can read a recipe.
Adam: Perfect. That also might involve playing with weird tech that comes in from scenes which can be really freakin' cool.
Stiles: Aliens?
Adam: Not yet. But I've got my fingers crossed.
Stiles: So is the fact my long term girlfriend an engineering wiz who is going off to get her masters at MIT a bonus? Because I'm sure she won't mind me using her brain on a consultant basis if it gets me a job. [smirks]
Adam: [he laughs] Only if Mac says it's okay.
Stiles: He might. [rubs his neck a bit] It's Derek's sister.
Adam: Well, we'll see what happens if it ever comes up. [he leans back in his seat] So tell me about you, Stiles.
Stiles: Um, well I'm originally from California. Beacon Hills. My dad's the sheriff out there. I came here on a full ride for lacrosse and I'm currently assistant captain on the NYU team - well, until I graduate in two weeks.
Adam: Oh, cool. That's the one that's kind of like field hockey right?
Stiles: Yeah, kinda. It's a Native American game that Europeans stole, renamed, and played in high society boarding schools until it became cool.
Adam: As most things do.
Stiles: But yeah. Other than that, I'm a sci fi geek, zombie aficionado, and can take pretty much anyone in Star Wars Trivia.
Adam: Awesome. Then we should get along great, man. Which is good because we are going to be spending a lot of time together.
Stiles: I promise I'm fun to be around. [grins]
Adam: Alright. Now, you still have to get past the boss, and his standards are like ... way higher than mine. But he just wants to be sure that good people are going to be handling his evidence. A lot rides on the chain of evidence and the conclusions we derive from them.
Stiles: So to him, I have to appeal more to my responsibleness and attention to detail and respect for authority?
Adam: [snaps and points] Pretty much. He's not that much of a joker. His sense of humor is very subtle, blink and you'll miss it.
Stiles: I can see why that's interview number two.
Adam: Yep. Normally there aren't two interviews at all, but since we're going to be working in the same enclosed space, Mac wants to make sure we get along.
Stiles: Making sure we won't kill each other on day one. Good plan.
Adam: Yep. Plus he's a busy guy, so we try not to waste his time.
Stiles: Efficiency as well. Any interview questions I should prepare?
Adam: They change every time. Just be honest, because he's scary good at telling when you're lying.
Stiles: He's not going to hook me up to like, a lie detector test is he?
Adam: No. [a beat] I don't think so.
Stiles: Feeling my neck to check my heart beat?
Adam: No. [another beat] He's just got this stare, you know. Where it's like he's seeing into your soul so he can learn all your secrets?
Stiles: Yeah, this sounds like the interview I had with the Hales when they learned I wanted to date Cora.
Adam: And that clearly worked out well for you.
Stiles: I'm cute and adorable. Of course it did.
Adam: I don't think adorable counts for as much with Mac.
Stiles: You haven't seen me use my puppy eyes. [grins]
Adam: Mac is immune to puppy eyes.
Stiles: Scratch the puppy eyes approach.
Adam: Just be you and know your stuff because he is going to quiz you hard.
Stiles: I'm probably overthinking things anyway. [deep breath] So um, I schedule that next interview with you?
Adam: No, Mac will do that. I give him a stack of names and he schedules everything so he will be in touch.
Stiles: Alright. So is there anything you want from me?
Adam: Nope. I think we're good to go here. [stands up and holds out a hand] We'll be in touch.
Stiles: Thanks. [shakes his hand, and he'll just... head back to the loft]
Cora: [and his girlfriend will be there, and in the process of packing up things to take with her to Boston]
Stiles: [and he comes in and sighs, tugging his tie free] I think I made it through round one.
Cora: [glances over] Yeah? That's good.
Stiles: Yeah. But now I get to just sit and wait and see if I even make it to round two.
Cora: [nods] That tends to be how it goes.
Stiles: I need to talk to Derek for advice on what this next person is going to be like.
Cora: Who do you have to talk to next?
Stiles: Mac?
Cora: Taylor? He's really nice. I met him once when I had to spend an afternoon at the crime lab.
Stiles: You... spent an afternoon in the crime lab?
Cora: I was waiting for Laura to pick me up and Derek was on patrol and Flack said I could hang out at the lab until she was done. It was mostly me sitting in the break room doing my homework but he's the reason I got into chemistry. He gave me practical demonstrations of the stuff I was learning.
Stiles: I…may have offered to use your mad engineering skills as a consultant.
Cora: [she grins] I would be happy to. But I'm sure you will have your hands full with Lindsay for stuff like that.
Stiles: Lindsay?
Cora: Monroe. She likes experiments.
Stiles: Does anyone but Mac know about werewolves?
Cora: Lindsay does. She's the hunter who helped us catch Kate.
Stiles: [blinks] A hunter?
Cora: She's not a bad one. But she grew up in Montana. It's ... a whole different playing field.
Stiles: ... Okay. So I don't have to worry about her trying to hunt me.
Cora: No. She helped put Kate away. She's really nice. I think her and Flack have a thing, but I don't spend enough time with them to say for sure.
Stiles: [nods] I just... the only hunter type I know is Allison, and she's not really a hunter, you know?
Cora: [she nods] In Montana ... werewolves are sort of the unspoken secret of the area. And the packs out there think that because things are more spread out, they can get away with more. But she's fair - if you're not hurting anyone, she'll leave you alone. The fact that you're a part of Derek's pack will probably help.
Stiles: [just nods, but he's still a bit nervous. He's just a bundle of nerves lately]
Cora: [she can see that, and she'll reach for his hand to pull him closer] Hey. You okay?
Stiles: [he looks at their hands, then up at her and nods] Yeah, it's just... it's a lot of change.
Cora: I know. But it's good change. Mostly.
Stiles: I'm just... I'm not good with change. And I keep worrying about us being separated and remembering how much it hurt when we broke up and I just... I can't get out of my head when I think about it.
Cora: Hey. [she pushes up on her toes and leans in to kiss him softly] We're not breaking up again.
Stiles: [he kisses her back, but it's obvious that he's not fully there] I know. Trust me, I know.
Cora: I'm gonna miss you too. But this isn't going to be the same thing. We will probably see each other every weekend and at the end of the semester I'm coming home. To you. I promise.
Stiles: [nods] I know that too. I'm just... I know I'm worried about nothing, but until it happens it's an unknown.
Cora: Yeah, I know. I'm scared too. I'm going somewhere where I'm not going to know anyone. I'm going to be living on my own for the first time ever. It's ... scary. But it's a good scared. Because I know that good things are going to come from it.
Stiles: [he knows all this, but he is a pessimist when stressed so he just nods, sucking on his lip instead]
Cora: [sighs softly before pulling him closer] C'mon. Maybe we should go out for a bit. See a movie? [get him out of his own head for a bit. It might do him some good]
Stiles: [he just leans back into her] A movie would be good.
Cora: Okay. [leans in to kiss him again] You change, I'll see what's playing.
Stiles: [he kisses her back, a bit more there. She'll get a small smile and nod, and then he pulls himself up to start changing]
Cora: [and she will find them an appropriately geeky movie and off they'll go!]
